We were awakened at 1:00 this morning with the news that a bug had lodged itself in the ear of one of our interns. Niel set off to see if anything could be done short of taking her to the hospital.
When he came home nearly an hour later, he recounted the story. The short version: He was finally able to extricate the bug with water, natural suction, and a bobby pin. And what he pulled out of her ear astounded him. It wasn’t the small bug he imagined it to be. It was a huge moth!
Uhh… hello?! A moth? In her ear?
I had a difficult time falling back to sleep. My ears felt all too exposed to the horrible moths of the world. As if I needed another reason to hate them…
I think I need to invest in earplugs.

That is so awful! I hope your intern is OK after that experience. Though, I venture to guess that she probably doesn’t think to kindly of moths now…
oh my! Just 2 days after listing your horror of them! Awful! Why in the world would a moth climb in someone’s ear anyway? I thought they were attracted to light???!?!
That is ewie gross. I saw a little millipede thing last night and kept thinking it was going to crawl into my ear. Shivers.
My oh my… I have to say I would have loved to see Niel performing the extraction… truly a man of many talents ;)
TIA, TIA… I think earplugs should now be standard issue bed-time gear!!
So does your ocd extend to an aversion of the use of mosquito netting? They sell the kind that you attach to the ceiling and it drapes down over the sides of the bed, yet light and air may permeate to facilitate your profuse nocturnal reading. Just a thought…

angie — yes, yes, yes! i agree. i just told niel the other day, “that’s it! we need to get a mosquito net.” he just looked at me with THAT look and didn’t answer. next time in joburg, i’m gonna be on the hunt for one…

Ok, that would freak me out. That is almost as bad as the huge tarantula that fell from the thatch one night! remember. Casey, Kelly and I wore our hoods in the house for 2 weeks! I hate moths!
well now I’m doubly skeeved out – thinking about the moths and the tarantula! (squirms uncomfortably).
We really did wear our hoods for two weeks. lol.
