twenty-two: overflow mugs

I have a kitchen cabinet at home that is stocked with Starbucks travel mugs. Stocked.

too many starbucks travel mugs

And that picture was taken after I’d already weeded out twenty-two mugs to give away.

overflow of travel mugs

And yet, still, when I walk into a Starbucks I can’t help but look at their selection of merchandise. I can’t help but get travel-mug-envy when I see the newest, latest, greatest models for sale. I can’t help but make an occasional purchase. As if I need yet another travel mug.

What do you collect—intentionally or unintentionally?

  1. That is without a doubt my most favorite part of your kitchen! I loved looking at them every morning :)

I collect shot glasses…have forever and I get them wherever I go. I have no idea how many I have, in the hundred + now. I love to see them from all over the world…even though they are stored at my sisters house back home, so I really hardly ever seen them. :( One day!!! heheehe

Woah, that’s quite the collection of travel mugs, Alece! Starbucks should send you an appreciation letter for your loyalty – at the very least a solid gold one for its most special customers. ;)

Things I enjoy collecting intentionally (but not obsessively):

    - makeup (like a moth to the flame when I go by
a Sephora, although I’ve gotten better)
    - exercise clothes (but only if on sale!)
    - David Winter cottages (remind me of England)
    - nice papers (have always loved stationery
    stores)
    - bird and rooster things (don’t know how this
    started)
    - beads for making jewelry (recently caught the
    beading bug!)

That’s about all I can think of right now!

I don’t know that I collect anything anymore since I live overseas. I love Botswana Baskets and find myself having to hold back when I take guests and such to the Basket Lady. I have them all over my house and all are usable.

I think I would have a travel mug fetish too…..actually I love me a good coffee mug period. I too like to look at the starbucks cups…..especially the valentines ones. :)

my aunt started a collection of timbles years ago….it was fun for me because i always knew what to get her when I was out and about…she died a few years ago and left them to me. So, i suppose i collect thimbles, though I haven’t added to the collection since it has been mine.

I do love travel mugs..but mainly because i loose them or break them all the time (like the one that I think is still at your house)…little fat mug where are you?

  5. Debra says:

I have tons of scrapbook paper … it’s so pretty I just can’t help myself and I can envision my pretty’s pictures on them with great stories … but, alas, they are still waiting to be made into lovely scrapbooks. Someday ….

I collect dinner napkins. (NO not used). I started just after I got adopted when I was 4. I have hundreds somewhere in my parent’s home. I’m pretty much a creature of habit, so napkins from Rochella’s or Mcdonalds (Icemans favorite) or Don Pedro’s (best burrito in town) napkins don’t cut it anymore. But… When I can I do add.

    (love ya)

  7. Brandy says:

who knew Starbucks had that many different travel mugs!!!! HAHA!!!

I am bad about makeup….lipsticks more specifically. Lipstick makes me smile. Ever since I was little I have LOVED lipstick. I’m like my Granny in that way. I love it.

Shoes. Back when we had much more extra ca-ching, I bought shoes all.the.time. It has been VERY hard for me to give up shoe buying. *sniff*

    Willow Tree figurines. Love them.

Jake collects shot glasses. When we were first married he INSISTED on displaying them on our entertainment center. I was horrified. 7.5 years later they are out in the garage displayed on top of his mini fridge where he keeps his beer. haha!

I know I am forgetting stuff, but these last 8 months or so I’ve had to stop ALL impulse buying/collecting….so it’s dwindled. LOL! Except for the lipsticks. But that’s no surprise. ;-)

  8. Brandy says:

    OH! PURSES!!!!

I KNEW I was forgetting a big one. Jake HATES this fetish the most. haha! I’m a purse addict. Seriously. Purse. Large bag. Small bag. If I can carry stuff in it and it’s cute, I want it. Need it. HAVETOHAVEIT. That is probably my worst actually, I miss buying purses.

Dang, how did I forget that one?!

  9. Debra says:

OH, Danielle … books, books and more books … me, too!

    So much fun!

I have one. One wonderful mug from the blessed Bux.

    I collect kaleidoscopes, intentionally.

  11. jane says:

our mugs are always getting broken from daily use, you can ship them to us, we will use them daily!

(that’s all Husband put on his Christmas list for my parents.)

  12. Michelle says:

I had no clue Starbucks had travel mugs.

I collect milk jugs. They must be pottery.

  13. Lisa says:

Ack! How could I forget? Heidi helped me to remember – I also love my collection of German paper napkins. I have every imaginable kind. Germans love what they call their “serviettten technique,” which is using napkins for decoupage projects. I just bought another package today, ones with a Victorian Christmas figures.

I smiled to see what Brandy wrote above about lipsticks! Yeah!! I’m not the only one!! And I love those Willow Tree figurines, too.

Next time I’m in a Starbucks, I’ll be thinking of all of you that have such a love for those travel mugs. :)

  14. Becca says:

Ummm… I have a need for constant accumulation of blue pens.
    Hah.

  15. Photoqueen says:

My husband collects shot glasses from places we travel to (though we don’t drink anything that actually belongs in a shot glass!). And I collect plastic cups – you know, the kind you get at restaurants and bars? Yeah, I take mine – and any laying around on nearby abandoned tables – home. I wash them up good and use them! I have a whole shelf of them!!

  16. alece says:

oh my. i needed that unexpected laughter!

  17. Brandy says:

After doing my post today I realized….

    HOW COULD I FORGET APRONS?!?!

    I heart aprons. ;-)

I love fashion! when i worked at Victorias Secret I always wanted the newest color bras and matching panties. Now i am really missing my discount and eying the new winter line with jealousy.

  20. Brandy says:

    Heidi!! HAHAHAHA!!!!

Seriously though. I’m like a hoarder of all things cute. And pretty. heehee

Lisa, gotta love the lipsticks! I have SO MUCH MAKEUP it is ridiculous. And every kind. BareMinerals, Clinique, Maybelline, Loreal, Wet’n'Wild…HAHA!!! I don’t discriminate. heehee However, I am a bare minerals convert for my main stuff and I am panicking b/c I’m nearly out of my foundation and it’s so dang $$$ when you buy them individually. Thank goodness for Christmas! LOL!

  21. Lisa says:

Brandy, we could have lots of fun comparing our collections, I’m sure! Fellow makeup junkies know that Wet ‘n Wild has some great stuff (esp. the eye shadows), better quality than a lot of the higher-priced lines.

Yesterday I pulled out an old favorite lipstick (Cranberry Lemonade by Fresh). Boy oh boy, what a reminder that the right lipstick has MAGICAL powers for giving you a real lift! ;)

  23. mandie says:

Yes. I love Starbucks travel mugs. But I always seem to lose them or drop & break them. So I currently have 1.

    I collect 2 things:
1…Books. I’m addicted to reading. And I have this great floor to ceiling bookshelf to fill up. Last count was over 120 books. But that was a few months ago.
2…Photos. I’m a photographer so I guess it just comes with the job.

Brandy :: I that you collect Willow Tree figurines…my mom loves them! Have you seen the Willow Tree nativity set? It’s great.

  24. Yeah, I like your mugs too. I collect a lot of junk. I have stuff like salt-n-pepper shakers (but only the funky cool kind) I have a bunch-o-books and letters from friends though out the years…I also have Christmas ornaments from places near and far that I have and not even ornaments just stuff I stick in our tree. Yeah, like I said…I am a collector of junk. Dang.

  26. Brandy says:

oh oh oh! MANDIE, I just saw a Willow Tree Nativity ORNAMENT the other night at a Christmas Party. I have seen the full Nativity and dang would I love that one! LOL!

Lisa, that link is cool! And I soooo totally agree with that. Lipstick sure can perk a girl up! I always tell Jake “I feel NAKED without my lipstick on.” Outside of my house, it’s ALWAYS on. Immediately after we eat anywhere….lipstick comes out. My mom and my granny laugh at me over. It’s a compulsion I think. HHAHAHA!!!

  27. holy cow!! And I’ve just been wanting one mug from Starbucks. I think you should share a few with a mugless sista ;)

Do sippy cups and lids count???? I have a cabinet that looks just like yours with them? And I definitely don’t intentionally collect them. It just happens when you have a 2 and 4 year old. :)

  28. Lisa says:

So with you, Brandy, so with you! :D

Alece, thanks for the great questions, as always!

  29. Natalie Jane says:

I’ve moved so much, I don’t know if I collect anything. On purpose or otherwise. Although my mom has started buying me monkey related items, and it was with the latest installment (a plastic, yellow ring with a monkey face on it) that I realized that I really love it. Hmmm…. I should let her know that.

  30. edfromct says:

Alece, I guess you do send a lot time, and money, at Starbucks.

Except for the songs on my iPod, 1,200 and movies in my DVD collection, a little over 100, I don’t collect things.

In my library I do have the complete collection of Calvin & Hobbes, Berkeley Breathed’s Bloom County and Opus (the penguin), and Walt Kelly’s Pogo (the possum).

The first thing I do to start the day is read the comic strips.

  31. i collect crumbs in the corner of my kitchen.

    unfortunately no one wants those.

oh, i collect baking stuff – like i buy more powdered sugar when i already have enoiugh. and then i have a cupboard full of sugar.

  32. Brandy says:

oooh Sarah, me too! me too! on both accounts! LOL!

  33. Right now, if you saw my house you’d believe that I collect DUST.
    :)

    That’s about it…

And I have a question – how in the world do you keep all the lids paired up correctly? We have 5 mugs, and I can’t keep ‘em straight.

I’ve got to get my hands on one of those give-aways ;)

You’ve TOTALLY got me hooked on all things starbucks. Speaking of… how did we not get a red cup today??? I’m still game…

  35. hannahruthie says:

I guess you could say I collect scarves. I have more than enough and my friends have told me that they will not buy me any because they refuse to support my fetish. I probably have about 20 …so far.

  36. my roommate and i collect Alece profile pictures! we are still holding out to find her rookie pic one day. we currently have the one with Alece in the cowboy hat matted and framed over our fireplace.

I go through phases of collecting. one being shoes. payless to be exact.

i love cool jackets and travel bags.

    I could easily collect REI

  37. alece says:

tracee – THAT made me laugh.

y’all collect some crazy stuff! and i thought i was bad! ha!

  38. Megan says:

My mom always calls me a packrat…. I USED to collect tea sets and rocks, but those collections didn’t stick.

Now I collect: (1) Thimbles… everywhere I go, I get thimbles. I have … tons. (2) Nutcrackers. Every year my mom gets me a new one at Christmastime – I have over 30, I think. One of my life goals is to get a giant one – but they’re hundreds of dollars, so it will probably never happen. :) (3) Bumper stickers – my car looks a little ridiculous, but I don’t care. (4) Key chains – I only have like.. two keys on my key ring but it’s very jingly from all my keychains.

I just like collecting things. Ooh I also used to collect beanie babies. And I “collect” DVDs, I guess. I’m like a small Blockbuster. I guess you could say books because I have so many, I just have never thought of it as collecting. Oh and I also unintentionally collect small rubber ducks. My car has twenty or so ducks in it. I got one because he was Irish and fun, and then campers at camp got me a bunch, and people just assumed I collected them, so now I have like twenty. *sigh* I mean, I do love ducks but I never meant to collect them. Hmm. I’m sure there’s more and I just can’t think of them right now. Wow. I never realized how ridiculous I am! ahaha.

  39. alece says:

bumper stickers?! i never knew you were one of THOSE people! ha!

i’ve missed you nutmeg. i loved seeing you on here.

  40. Theresa says:

Alece I started laughing when I read this. I have been coveting a Starbucks travel mug for a couple weeks. I still haven’t bought it, won’t now.

I also remember your Hippo Butts. :) I still have my many elephants. Love em all!!

    Hope you are well!

  41. alece says:

    buy it! it’s okay! you’re allowed! :)

  42. Andrew Ronzino says:

    Oh, you know…dots.

  43. Like travelling mugs very much. Definitely picked that up in London.

I collect books, LOVE stationery and those little toys connected with thin elastic that bend all different ways when you push the button at the bottom in… no idea what they’re called, but they’re my best.

  44. alece says:

    yeah, andrew, explain “dots”! :)

    other collections of mine:

    books
    movies
    hippos

i’m sure there are more. i have fuzzy brain and can’t think though!

  45. Cindy Beall says:

Once again, we are sisters. I always go to the merchandise section of Starbucks, too. It’s my weakness…more than coffee!

  46. alece says:

i KNEW i loved you, miss beall!

  47. Andrew Ronzino says:

When I was young, I would rip the spool catching holes off of old school printer paper, and I would roll them into tight rolls and keep them in a bag…and that’s about it…they were dots, and I collected them.

  48. alece says:

reading the explanation — even though i knew — still made me laugh.
