trust is a gamble

“Trusting anything – your family, your instincts, the dim-witted anchor on the 10:00  news – it’s all a gamble. With plenty of promises and no guarantees.

But I’m finding, the longer I live, no matter how often I fall on my face, that folding is for losers. That winners take hits. Call it going all in. Call it rolling the dice. Screw hedging your bets.

Bluff. Raise. Call. Stand.

Again and again and again.”

From the closing monologue in
In Plain Sight, S3 E10

  1. LOVE [charity] always. protects, always TRUSTS, always hopes, always perseveres.

    keep on trusting.

  2. Staci says:

    Super true….love it ;)

  3. Kyla says:

This is exactly what I needed to read today, and everything that I needed to read today. To choose to not give up when trusting is not just difficult, but seems impossible. To refuse to not give into depression and isolation. To trust that when I am battle-weary, the Lord is strong and mighty in battle. To be encouraged to take a risk when there is a chance that I might lose. Yes, even when. Again, and Again.

    • i’m so so glad this was timely for you today too, kyla. in fact, i’d really questioned whether or not i should post this at all… now i’m really glad i did.

know that you are not alone…

    Wow… Love this…

Trust is a gamble…. and frankly in life sometimes you are not holding the winning card or you call on someone’s bluff. It hurts and it’s mind-blowing.

But, eventhough how stinging of the reality that I am finding this to be lately in my life, I still in my heart want to be that :naive: little girl and keep trying. But I DON’T So much.

I just remember that my amazing Father is whom I trust in…

I reread my comment and re read the passage…

and the last line ” all winners take hits, call it all in…”

      Wow….

again. again.. again… I need to trust.

  6. “As these [daunting] scenes rose before her, tears began to prick in her eyes and the thorn pricked in her heart, but almost at once she turned to the Sheherd and said thankfully, “I will trust you and do whatever you want.” Then, as she looked up in his face, he smiled most sweetly and said something he had never said before, “You have one real beauty, Much-Afraid, you have such trustful eyes. Trust is one of the most beautiful things in the world. When I look at the trust in your eyes I find you more beautiful to look upon than many a lovely queen.”

-excerpt from Hinds Feet on High Places

Alece, this type of trust reminds me of you…a desire to keep trusting God despite the daunting circumstances and heart pains He has allowed you to go through. And I know He is pleased with you.

Still, trusting God despite hardship that He allows sometimes feels easier than opening yourself up to trusting people – especially after hurt. I find myself in a season of finally opening my heart up to others after quite a few years of stuff. The freedom it is beginning to bring internally in my heart is awesome…but I already know pain is in the future because of it. We can’t escape that. That’s why I LOVE that quote you put up….especially the part that “Winners take hits.” !!!

  7. Interesting quote.

    And yeah …. it’s always a gamble to trust….

  8. Morgan says:

Love this! Are we willing to risk it all and put it in God’s hands? The groundwork has been laid! :)

I saw a journal today that I am contemplating buying and the word on the front cover was “trust” and that so resonated with my heart…I want to trust God recklessly and stand still and see what He will do! Especially because I feel like i’ve got some BIG things to trust God with lately and would so rather trust than to play it safe. thanks for sharing! i just might have to buy that journal… :)

Do you think this is the way God feels when He takes a gamble to trust us?

  11. I agree!! This is probably the scarriest thing about being a Christian for me because what if I am completely wrong and have wasted my life! Like the quote said though, ” Screw hedging your bets.” I need to go all in and continue to free fall into the unknown. Trusting God is there and being confident in his love and strength!

  12. LS says:

when i watched this episode the other night i was thinking about that same monologue. the only person that we can trust that isn’t a gamble is the Lord, yet, that is the person we often struggle to trust the most. isn’t that so funny?

just this week i was telling my counselor that trusting the Lord is so incredibly scary to me because it means i am saying “whatever you want to do, i am on board. . .even if i don’t like it. . .even if it makes me uncomfortable.” even though it is scary, i choose to place my bet on the Lord — He will always come through for me even when it is uncomfortable.

    • i love that you watched the same episode. my routine when i can’t sleep (most nights) is to watch random shows on hulu until i doze off. i was almost out by the end of this episode, and then that amazing monologue started. i had to rewind it and listen to it a few more times until i finally sat up and transcribed it. such richness in those words.

and you’re right… the Lord is the only sure-bet, yet trusting Him still is so hard for me at times. MOST of the time. i continue wrestling though, because i ultimately know He is trustworthy.

      • LS says:

i do the exact same thing when i can’t sleep, which, like you, is most nights. i can’t remember the last time i was in bed before 1am and i have to be up most mornings by 6:30am.

i have to agree with you that trusting Him is ridiculously difficult. . .more difficult than i want to admit. if it was as easy ((as some church’s proclaim. . .bless their hearts)) though, the reward wouldn’t be as great. right now, my life and future totally depends on His trustworthiness. . .and i know that is a beautiful thing ((even though it is SUPER hard and UNCOMFORTABLE 99.9% of the time. . .))

  13. Terri Poss says:

When it comes to trusting God, all in is the only place to be. I think you’re either all in or you’re not in at all.

    Bluff. Raise. Call. Stand.
Put on the full armor of God, that you may be able to STAND firm against the schemes of the devil (like generating seeds of doubt and mistrust!). . . that you may be able to resist in the evil day (like when you’re attacked) and having done everything, to STAND firm. STAND firm therefore. . . (Eph. 6:11-14)

Keep standing, friend! And when you get knocked down I’ll be there to take your hand and help you up (or scoop you up on my own, if need be) and establish your footing once again! Keep standing!

    Love and hugs from VA!

  14. There’s a Rascal Flatts song in here somewhere. STAND. I’ve looked for the scriptural reference to those lyrics. It’s everywhere, really.

Trust, always – God tells us, and we tell each other. Then someone whispers “guard your heart” and we get them confused, thinking they are opposites.

I won’t take that “dim-witted anchor” comment personally. In my case you’re half right (I’ll let you guess which half).

    • “we get them confused, thinking they are opposites” — that’s exactly it. and i still get caught there. you worded that perfectly…

are you a news anchor?! that is SO COOL! ;) and i was quoting the TV show — i don’t think you’re dimwitted at all! ;)

  15. nikkie says:

now, this we could share over coffee : )

  16. Bonnie says:

I wonder what would come of this if tossed out in the middle of a youth group meeting.

I loved reading this. It reminded me why I don’t really care for the phrase “take care.”

  17. You’re right Alece. We need to go all in.

Sometimes we choose not to risk because the chance of failure/hurt is so high,or too freshly imprinted in our mind.

But if we choose not to risk then we also choose to postpone or destroy the chance of winning.

It may be a “gamble” – but the chance of those trust/love relationships are always worth it.

Who ever “won” by playing it safe?
Read this quote today: “the lust for comfort always destroys the passion of the soul.”

    Love ya girl!

  18. Jenny says:

“dim-witted anchor on the 10:00 news”

you must be in DC right now friend :) tee hee

  19. One of my friends and I have this little saying of “ATB.” We have even considered tatooing it somewhere. It means “Assume the best.” …Because we don’t….

We know we will get hurt if we trust everyone, and there is wisdom in being cautious, but for the most part we lean towards not assuming the best about people. We finally realized…”What’s the alternative? Assuming the worst?”

Not sure if this was the trust you were getting at, but it made me think of my little ATB phrase. (-:

    • i love that. at Thrive, one of the phrases we kick around often as a staff is “assume positive intent”… same idea. for the same reasons.

at the catalyst conference last year, andy stanley spoke on trust vs. suspicion. it was SO good. for me, as someone who struggles with trust, it was such a good message on trust within an organization. (i found someone’s stellar notes from the session online, if you’re interested: http://www.timschraeder.com/2009/10/09/catalyst-09-andy-stanley-round-2/)

and speaking of catalyst… you gonna be there this october?

  20. earl says:

also… i just watched this episode last night in the middle of my “i don’t wanna sleep yet” grumpiness. and not even because of the quote. in fact, i didn’t even realize it until i heard the monologue at the end. grin.
