top ten

The top ten things I’ve learned in the past few weeks:

10. Blowing bubbles makes me feel light-headed. I am reminded of my short-lived career as a flutist in junior high. Playing the flute made me light-headed too, so I had to quit.

9. Sleep is a gift from God.

8. Changing diapers is like riding a bike. After many years of not doing it, I started out a little slow and rusty. But I’ve got it down pat now. My high school babysitting days have really paid off this month.

7. Music is therapy for my soul.

6. It truly takes a village to raise a child. I don’t know how single parents do it. I don’t even know how double parents do it.

5. Starbucks is not overrated.

4. Change is hard. It’s not that I didn’t already know that, but it’s been reinforced this month.

3. Sometimes doing all you can do is all you can do.

2. I need to hear I am loved. Knowing it just isn’t enough. Which means I need to say it more than I do to those I love.

1. My new favorite smell is newborn.

    Oops.
I have good reasons, though. And I NEVER refuse a ‘Bucks run. It is a great thing when the time is right.

  8. Michelle says:

Loving the newborn smell is the first step toward having one.

“Sometimes doing all you can do is all you can do.”

    That’s my mantra!! ;)

  9. This is a great list. I agree with Andrew.

  10. Brandy says:

    I’m with Yayles….. come baaaaack!

And newborn smell…. that is what heaven smells like. I’m sure of it. ;-)

  11. Cindy Beall says:

    Oh, I love newborn smell.

    I love #2

    You are so right Alece!!!

    Been prayin…. and always

    Love you!!

  14. #9! :-)

it’s His Gift to His Children – we may be adults… but we are STILL his children… so WHY do we keep putting off His Gift for as long as humanly possible every single day?… Learn From little Al… nap and BE with Him let Him speal and you lie back and listen for a change :-)

( And do it during the night – that is why the sun goes down during it.. it’s a long estavlished process worked well until man invented the light bulb! – oh and Blogs! ;-) )

…and the newborn baby thing being Universal…. only among parents… mostly the female of the species at that!

Didn’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble with that newsflash.

    <B

  15. And you are SO loved! :-)

  16. This may be weird but I only like the smell of MY newborn. Mostly I think other babies smell a little bad like rotten spit up!! But I am glad you like it and all your other things. When do you head back home?

  17. i’ve never changed a diaper. i decided recently to hold off ’til i have my own kid. that’ll be a special moment, for sure.

  18. annie says:

#2 is quite profound. That one got me. It’s so true.

The smell of newborn is very intricately connected to one of my favorite smells: skin. It’s exciting, calming, warming, inviting, all at the same time.

    Love you, Alece!

  19. truly a great list.
i wonder what it is that makes babies smell so good?

probably the lack of free radicals. give it a year.

  20. Hannah says:

    I love you miss Alece.

  21. I love you more than they do!

  22. alece says:

gigi — how are those tummy ickies doing??? FYP!

beandip — interesting? hmmm… and yes, maybe i shall make more of these lists. i’ll get my own letterman thing going on…

spooner — thanks for likin’ ‘em all. and for loving me!

    ayles — awww… thanks! i appreciated that!

tam — thank you, thank you for praying for me. that means a lot.

yeller — i think bath & body works should use “newborn” as a fragrance. but i don’t want to think about how they’d actually go about doing that.

smileyroo — what are your good reasons? do share. (and you’re not disowned! never!)

    michelle — first step—-check.

talia — you are so agreeable.

brandy — i love your new picture; you are adorable. and your comment reminded me of a recent remark i made that the baby smells heavenly! thanks for missing me… i miss “all y’all” a lot!

cindy — i wish i could bottle it up.

applepie — universal truths? do you get lightheaded blowing bubbles? :)

heidi — you’ve been so faithful in your prayers for me; thank you. and thanks for the love.

bub — oh i’m sleeping every chance i get, don’t you worry. i’ve napped more this month than in my entire adult life combined. and i think you’re probably right about most guys not appreciating that newborn smell as much as we women do…

faith — well, that’s just because you haven’t smelled this newborn! (early september)

mandy — wow. for real? you never babysat? that was my livelihood all through junior high and high school…

annie — i have a hard time wrapping my mind around your love of the scent of skin… that’s kind of amazing to me…

joy — “probably the lack of free radicals” – you made me laugh. you’re probably right, but it’s still funny.

hannah — thanks for the love, li’l missy. now maybe you can email me once in a while! (wink)

    beandip (again) — awwww… i know, i know.

  23. Rock on #5, I’m there for you…don’t let the fact that no one commented about you make you fear or fret…you, St. Big Bucks are loved and most certainly AREN’T overrated!

And yes, miss alece…you too are LOVED!!!! [and you're not overrated either]

  24. alece says:

stegall — ha ha! thank you for giving St. Arbuck a shout-out. and telling me that i’m not overrated! you make me smile.

  25. and the smile on this face has alece ALL OVER IT!!!!

  26. roo says:

Good reason #1: There’s a Starbucks right across from a great, family-owned, better-environment coffee shop here at school. (The reasons are the “great,” “family-owned,” and “better-environment.”)
Good reason #2: Every time I go to the ‘Bucks these days, my coffee tastes burnt. Apparently it’s the new machines they are using… but I regret getting the extra shot. Every time.

  27. roo says:

:) and i got a picture over there, too. >

  28. becca says:

star bucks costs a lot of bucks.
But they have yummy cookies. Mmmm.

  29. roo says:

Good point, Becca. That’s reasons 3 and 4. More expensive than other places (even the family-owned place!), and you have to PAY for INTERNET. If their coffee is that expensive, you’d think their internet would at least be free (like it is at the other place).

  30. alece says:

roo and becca — good points, all of them. but… i still love ‘em. (i’m all about smaller non-chain events, too, as long as they have good atmosphere and great coffee.)

i must say that i really like starbucks’ orange cranberry scones. and in the fall they have a pumpkin spice donut that is my all-time favorite sweet-treat. i do believe.

  31. edfromct says:

#10 – “Blowing bubbles”. I can’t remember the last time I blew bubbles. I need to let my inner child out more.

#8 – “Changing diapers.” I never did it for a child but I did have to change my 90 year old step mothers depends. I guess we could think if it as an act of love. I can’t think of any other reason to want to do it.

#7. “Music is therapy for my soul.” – as is reading your blog post.

#3. “Sometimes doing all you can do is all you can do.” – The most profound words I have read in a while, and so very true.

#2. “I need to hear I am loved. Knowing it just isn’t enough. Which means I need to say it more than I do to those I love.” – Too many people in my life, who are now gone, never heard that word from me. Never wait to tell someone who you fell love for that you love them. We can never say or hear the word love enough.

    1. “My new favorite smell is newborn.” I am with Love on this one. The only smells from children I can remember go back to #8. :)

  32. alece says:

(roo, way to go with getting your picture on here!)

ed — #10 – you should blow some bubbles this week. it might change your life forever. #8 – i think that changing elderly diapers would be much worse than infant diapers; you are a sweet, sweet man… #7 – wow. thank you. #3 – profound? again, thanks. i need to be reminded of that simply profound truth extremely often. #2 – “never wait” – thank you for that nudge. #1 – hopefully you’ll get the chance to sniff a newborn sometime; that’ll definitely change your life forever!
