5’4″ isn’t THAT short…is it?
I’ve got so much to say, and no time to blog. I hate when that happens!
But you should know that my blind-date-esque meetup at Starbucks turned out to be amazing. And the 17 people who showed up, overwhelmed me with their love. Seventeen! Yeah. That’s another post for another time when I actually have time.
For now, I think you should head over and read Tonggu Momma’s rendition of our time together… and the “excitement” that followed.
While you’re there, please stick up for me. TM’s making fun of my height again. (Or rather my lack of height. Hmph.) So let her know I sent you and stand up (on your tip-toes) for me, k?
Mmkaythanks.
Tuesday’s gonna be a long day for me. Any and all encouraging or humorous comments would be appreciated to help me get through it. You guys rock like that.
(Oh—Tonggu Momma? Sorry about that friendship-and-latte-induced car accident. We still good?)

A prayer for the day before you is being said here in Scotland as I’m easing into my day and you’re hopefully sleeping before yours begins. I was hoping to discover that this difficult day coincided with a good holiday that could bring some humor or help ease the tone of the day, but the results for Nov 17 are: National Homemade Bread Day, Lewis & Clark Day (they reached the Pacific 204 years ago today), and Take a Hike Day. Tomorrow is Mickey Mouse’s birthday – can’t you delay things until tomorrow?! But it sounds like your Starbucks reunion is a good reminder that yesterday, today and every other day on your journey will be We Love Alece Day. You are prayed for and supported across the world – you are loved and cherished by us and by Him – don’t forget that as you go forward into your day.
@gritandglory says:
thank you for those pre-dawn prayers. and i love the idea of “take a hike day” — not in the outdoorsy sense but in the “getouttamyway” sense! haha!
@nateonamission says:
5’4” is 7 1/2 inches shorter than me. That’s short. :) But it’s ok. Short people are awesome!
@chrystieecole says:
Girl, I know what you mean, I haven’t had time to read a blog or write a blog in days! And won’t have time until we get back from the Grand Canyon.
That is so awesome that seventeen people showed up in DC! You are loved.
By the way, you have a whole two inches on me. I stand at a whopping 5’2″.
Praying for your day…
@gritandglory says:
i totally pegged you as taller!
@atangie says:
The first time I met in-the-flesh a met-on-the-net person she brought her husband with her. They came to Bolivia from Canada. I must have told them eighteen-ten times that they were so tall! I probably embarrassed the heck out of them. But, seriously? What else was I to do? Both of them are quite a few centimeters over 6 feet. They grow em’ tree tall up in the North, I guess.
Hm, I wonder how tall I am? Maybe like 5’6″? Right around there.
@bajanpoet says:
It’s ok, Alece… I LOVE short people… it’s what first attracted me to my wife :) There’s this cuteness about short people that I find appealing…. lol
Ok, I’m 5’3.5″…. if I stretch up I can come somewhere close to 5’4″. So, hey yeah, 5’4″ is NOT short.
It is just some people’s perspective is all wrong.
@JewelzSightings says:
Sounds like you had quite the adventure! I have met some blogging friends in person as well. It’s always a blessing.
Funny thing happened to me not too long ago. As I walked into CVS a woman stopped me and asked me if I had a blog. Now we live in a pretty small town and no one up here that i know reads my blog… EXCEPT this woman. Somehow she found me through another woman and recognized my face.
It’s amazing these friendships we forge through blogworld.
If you ever head my way to see your friend north of me, give me a holler… I’ll meet you at our Starbucks! I know we would have some great convo’s.
Julie
@gritandglory says:
how funny to be recognized in your local CVS! i think that would freak me out a bit!
@JewelzSightings says:
yea, it freaked me out…. lol She said, “do you write Jewelz Sightings”? “Um, yea…..”
I’m thinking how in the heck do you know that… do I know you??? lol It was a freaky compliment… if there is such a thing!
I’m glad you were able to meet up with bloggy friends. I love those opportunities…
Have a blessed Thanskgiving!
So glad you had a fun time at St. Arbuck’s with all your friends! I’m sure that was a blessing.
God, Be with Alece’ today. Guide her, guard her and give her grace. She needs You to be there in each step, in each moment. Let her know beyond a shadow of a doubt that You love her passionately. Amen
@gritandglory says:
i loved reading your prayer for me. thanks, jen!
What about 4’9″? Yes, I am that short. Everyone is soooooo much taller than me. I also have four kids and so when I take them anywhere I get the craziest looks. So funny. I love being short except for when I want something on the very top shelf at the grocery store. God made us this way for a reason!!!!!!! Dynamite comes in small packages. Aleece thanks again for all of your blogging. :)
@gritandglory says:
you are so cute, alicia!
You met Lisa-Jo? And Lisa-Jo met YOU? Too cool. I’m jealous. The end.
@gritandglory says:
eeeeeee!
Hey, you’re taller than me. drivers license says i’m 5’3″, but i’m really more like 5’2 3/4″ (didn’t think that would fit on the tiny card!). i won’t mention my weight on the card, but let’s say my goal is to have my drivers license weight be true.
Hey Alece,
Woke up in the middle of a big windstorm with you on my heart…prayers for you from White Rock, BC. For strength, grace, fortitude, and the peace that only comes from trusting our Father.
Blessings,
Cindy
@gritandglory says:
wow. thank you for praying for me in the middle of the night. God is faithful. and He’s faithful through people like you.
I’m 5’2″.
@gritandglory says:
see… i thought you were taller, too! but wait… actually… i remember a picture of you and soliloquy, so i should’ve had some perspective… although she was bending down, wasn’t she? so yeah…
Also, my 6 year old took the photo. So I would say the perspective is definitely skewed.
5′ 3/4″ checking in here. You’re tall. Oh yeah. But my husband … 5’3″. Seriously. I think people remember us just because we’re so pint-sized.
Wanna hear a funny short story? (haha!) My best friend from grade school got married a few years ago. Her family and my family were always very close, so at one point both families grouped together for a photo. Out of approx 10 people (depending on how many siblings were present) no one was taller than 5’6″. And that was the dads. I’m actually a tad bit taller than my best friend (the bride) … my mother was 4’11″, hers was … probably 5’2″. sisters and brothers were all somewhere between 5’1″ and 5’5″. It was quite funny when we realized we looked like the land of little people. :D
So … you’re tall lady.
@gritandglory says:
ha ha! awesome!
So I’m thinking that if you are being made fun of for being 5’4″, then what would they say if they found out about my 5’2″ ish-ness?!?! We may be vertically challenged but we have feelings too dangit! Oompa-Loompas of the world UNITE!
On another note (not height related…humph…) ;D I love you muches! Did you listen to “My Paper Heart”? You must…. you must!….
As for today…check out Romans 8: 28-39… ” And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”….. and in 37-39 “…..”…. No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” He loves YOU! He called YOU! And NOTHING can make Him stop! Never forget that my friend… I love you……….
What? 5’4″???? With a heart as big as the one God gave you? Wait…. actually? That explains it…. He made your stature not so big so no one could miss just how big your heart is. You have to be asked often how a heart like yours could be contained in such a petite package… I mean… at least 2, 3 times a day, right? ’cause I’ve been reading you for a while and I’ve met lots of people through the years – tall, short…you know the drill but there are plenty of ‘em who have a heart Grinch-pre-CindyLouWho-size but not you. Nope. You’ve got enough heart to power 6′ at least….
@gritandglory says:
“grinch-pre-cindylouwho-size” — i love it!
I’m 5′ 2″ , so you can make fun of me! I’m always the shorty of the group..must be my Asian Sensation-ess that facilitated my lack of height!
I’m 5’5″, but wish I were taller. Then again, my mom’s 5′, so I’m glad I got more of my dad’s height.
Love that you had such a crowd show up on Sunday!! Wish I could have been one of them……
I’m sorry today was like it was. The only feel good thing I can think of to share right now is watching Zoey and Elmo from Sesame Street today on TV (yes, they’re real, they have to be!) do some kind of “don’t get sick, here’s the right way to cover a sneeze!” dance, and all the little kids that were dancing along with them. It made me go “Squeeee!!!” inside, it was so adorable.
Sometimes when people ask me how tall I am I say 5′ 10″ just to watch the look of dumb confussion…, usually followed by a “for real?”… People are so weird.
Glad you didn’t get stolen posting your location on the world wide web..baahaahaa!
Iloveyou.
I LOVEEEEEEEEEEEEE, love, love YOU FRIEND!
we are all there to hold your hand Tuesday.
and you are definitely not a shorty.
if you were all the guys would be hollering—SHAWTYYYYYYYYYY!!
haha HOLLLLA and i love you.
See, when I feel short I just tell people I am like 12 feet tall. Not only does it throw them off the shorter people around say, “Hey maybe I measured wrong, and I am taller than I think I am. Because I am not much shorter than the 12 foot tall gentleman over there.”
@cassgirl says:
5 ’4 !! You are short! But that’s okay you’ll be able to still reach me arm wings (wenis)
Love you FF..
5’4” is NOT short. It’s just perfect. It’s exactly the height God made you … perfect for loving on all those sweet kiddo’s in Africa, I might add! :) Love you!
@rfbryant says:
Meh. My license says 5’4″ the ruler says 5’3.5″
I just look at those tall people who make fun of me and remind them that I don’t HAVE to sit in the exit row of an airplane to be comfy. I can stand up anywhere on a plane — or a van or bus….
And for the God-answer — He made me just like He wanted me to be. He gave me wit and humor and a heart that aches for injustice and gets angry at dishonesty of any kind. If it’s good enough for the Creator, they can just get over themselves — bless their hearts. :-)
@gritandglory says:
“bless their hearts” – ha ha!
Forgive me. *grin* My giraffe-like self is just jealous.
@gritandglory says:
so’s my oompa-loompa-like self!
It is NOT that short. As I tell people, 5’4″ is just the small end of AVERAGE. All the charts say so.
And if you want proof, come to my church in the middle of Ohio. I am taller than 75% of the church. Seriously.
PS: my sister (^^) is 5’4″ too.
I love when the bloggy world comes full circle.
I started getting into blogs when my heart was stirred for the orphans of China. I was studying family planning and development policy in college and it hit me like a load of bricks.
I quickly became enamored reading blogs of adoptive families from China. Through there I “met” Tonggu Mama. By met that I mean, I read her blog and never commented. Through another adoptive family I met MckMama who had just launched Not Me Mondays.
I responded to one of her invitations to share prayer requests. And through that I received a comment from Sheryl of Perch fame. I responded back that my mom was going through something similar with the dizziness.
A couple weeks back I clicked on your photo after you left a comment about how no one had ever cried with her and held her. I was the next comment.
And I’ve only been reading your blog for a couple weeks, but I feel right at home with Tonggu Momma’s picking on you. I should note, I feel like I’ve known her longer so can’t come to your mighty defense.
I wish I had been able to attend the DC meet-up myself, but in August I moved from DC to Seattle. So… anyways. Not really funny, but thought I would share.
