  2. chrissulli says:

I read your blog. Bet you didn’t know that.

I’m moving to the Dominican Republic in July.

    • alece says:

hi chris! i didn’t know you were a Gritter. how’d you end up here?

what will you be doing in the DR?

      • chrissulli says:

Good question. For a second there I had no recollection of how I found your blog but I’m pretty sure I followed a link to “Confessions of an Adultress” maybe a month ago from a blog whose name I could look up. Been in my rss ever since.

I’m going to be working with a program called I Love Baseball. http://ilovebaseball.org Helping with the training, leading a small group/teaching english, grant writing, blogging/video/pics and whatever else God has in store for me while I’m there.

  3. Roo says:

Ummm, I have to think hard about this. I don’t think there is a whole lot you don’t know about me. :-D

  4. Tonggu Momma says:

Hmm… how about I was once bitten by a brown recluse spider? Yes, a POISONOUS brown recluse spider. The shots were brutal.

  5. Jessica says:

i want to work in the underwriting dept for the insurance company i work for and i am currently working on reaching that goal.

  6. when i was little, i didn’t know corn was a vegetable. cuz it tasted so yummy. :)

i believe that peppermint tea is the cure for any ache, physical or emotional.

i have only one standard for my pizza: that it have boocoos of cheese and even greater boocoos (sp?) of bell peppers. like…till you can’t even pick up the slice.

and lastly, i’m obviously hungry, because EVERY one of those statements had to do with some kinda food or beverage…

  7. Ed says:

I have have taken the Port Jefferson ferry from CT to Long Island a few times. The last time was about 6 years ago. If you have been in Port Jefferson Village around that time we may have meet.

I have a autographed picture from Susan Sarandon

I have an autographed “Marvelous” Marv Throneberry, New York Mets uniform shirt, from when he played on the 1962 NYM, in my closet.

These are the only two autographed objects I own.

    • alece says:

port jeff is one of my favorite towns. especially on a breezy summer evening. crazy to think we both could’ve been there at the same time at some point over the years.

tell me about meeting susan sarandon. (i love her in stepmom.)

      • Ed says:

I did once see Susan Sarandon in NYC, from a distance. However the autographed picture was a gift from my niece. She bought it for my birthday.

My favorite Sarandon movie scene is from Atlantic City, 1980. Burt Lancaster played an aging bookie. Sarandon had a apartment across from his. Every night he watched her cut a lemon and wash herself with it.

A great way to spend a summers day is to ride the ferry across the sound, about an hour each way, and spend the day in Port Jeff, relaxing.

        • alece says:

washing herself with a lemon!? really?! am i the only person who is bothered by this!? :)

maybe someday i’ll meet you in port jeff for some coffee. or iced tea. or beer. or whatever it is you most like drinking. [now, wouldn't THAT be something!]

          • annie says:

um. no. You should have seen my face reading that. <:?/ Or something like that. I think I’d have to see the scene. sounds weird. (lemon juice and lemon peel oil are great for the skin, though, so I could see – in part – the benefits of such a thing, but … washing yourself with a slice of lemon. not picturing it.)

  8. I have been working on this sandwich for over an hour.

Cherry Dr. Pepper is my latest addiction.

And on the topic of spiders…

When I was 7 or 8, I got bit repeatedly by a spider (may have been a brown recluse). I had welts all over my back and arms. And people wonder why I’m afraid of spiders.

So many directions I could go with this comment… freaky, weird, silly, deep, superficial… hmm… let’s go factual.

Fact: Sitcom that makes me laugh hard at least thrice during every tiny episode, every single time is ‘The Big Bang Theory’.

    • I love love love The Big Bang Theory.

My favorite: when Leonard’s mom comes to visit

    • alece says:

      never seen it. hmmm….

and, you know, you could choose G) All of the Above.

      • @ngie
        @
        says:

How can I resist going with G) seeing as I am Gigi on the G&G?!?!

freaky: (but a good freaky… just don’t be freaked out, ‘k?) I think about you every day.

weird: My eyes are double jointed. I can cross just one, then the other, etc.

silly: I laughed at myself last night because I ran a bath and didn’t realize it was cold, but hopped in anyway. Then when I was in I just sat there shivering and giggling at my silliness.

deep: I am scared, but pushing through.

superficial: If I had my way the longest hair on my head would measure no longer than 3 1/2 inches.

        • alece says:

thanks for thinking of me every day! and i think you need to vlog that eyeball trick. i gotta see it! i would’ve hopped right back outta that bath so fast. cold water is one of my LEAST favorite things ever. scared? i can relate. i want to fear Him more than i fear any of this. 3 1/2 inches!? what’s stopping you?

  11. Debra says:

I was absolutely NOT popular in school … ever, but I did win the Medina County Fair Queen contest in 1980. The first queen crowned in 50 years. This did not sit well with the other 82 contestants who were home-grown, small-town Texas girls. I didn’t know the “social rules.” I only joined the contest because we were new in town and my mom thought it would be a great way to make new friends … uhmmmm, not so much! Very much a growing experience … builds character (I think).

    • alece says:

girls can be so mean, can’t they!?

the first queen crowned in 50 years! way to bust onto the scene in a new town! i’d love to see a picture!

  12. Megan says:

When I was little, I had three imaginary friends: Joey, Eric, and their pet bulldog Whitefang.

At some point they went away for a while. But then I must have decided I wasn’t too cool for them, or maybe I was lonely/bored (technically an only child) so they came back. When my mom asked where they had been, I said visiting Joey’s grandmother in Florida. :)

  13. ummmm. I used to play softball in HS and I can bat left and right handed. I don’t know why that just popped in my head…so random. hehehe

    • alece says:

that’s some serious talent. especially because i can’t bat with either hand!

      • ok….this is another thing that has totally nothing to do with the previous entry, but I can’t contain my excitement any longer. I found a Starbucks here!!!! I didn’t think they had one on the island, but alas…yes! So, I got you another mug :) I don’t care that its not a surprise anymore. hehehe This one doesn’t say Rhodes on it like the Cyprus one did, cuz none of them say Rhodes at all. (Sorry) But, you’ll just have to know that its from here. I’m becoming your Greek Islands Starbucks Specialist!!! hehhee. I love it! I’ll send it on your way when I get back to TA, but just know its coming :) Love you!!!!

  14. TheNorEaster says:

I don’t know how to swim.

  15. I was 5’7″ when i turned 11 years old.
I got my tongue stuck to a frozen fence post. (there wasnt a flagpole to test the theory)
When i was 10 i wanted to be a Equine Veternarian.
when i was 8, I wore cowboy boots and carried a pop gun in a plastic holster on my waist for several weeks.
if i could live anywhere in the world right now, it would be Ballito.

  16. I really felt this past trip that I had (gasp) too much Starbucks.

  17. Jill says:

That I love funk and disco and I’m not afraid to admit it. And that I miss you. Hugs, Jill

    • alece says:

long overdue for an email to you.

i must admit: picturing you gettin your groove on to some funk and disco brought a huge smile to my face.

  18. I wish I was more interesting, but I can’t even think of something to write!

It took me a good chunk of time to figure this one out…

I miss being able to say Dumela. In three days it will be 9 months since I walked in South Africa, and to some extent my longing has disipated, but there are times when it’s all I can think about and I just want to go in my room and look at pictures from Intabazwe and Qwa Qwa. (which are, by the way, ALL over my walls.) Whoever said, “You can never shake the ancient dust of Africa off your boots,” was so right.

Also, I secretly still have a xanga blog. I don’t think it’s had 1 view in YEARS but I write on it very often, mostly secrets or heart-thoughts. It’s my little get-away when I need to write.

    • alece says:

GASP! i want in on your secret xanga blog!

and you’re so right: you can take the girl out of africa, but you can’t take africa out of the girl.

  19. ric says:

I can sing You Raise me Up in Italian a capella (Por ti Sere).

  20. annie says:

I am a new-found plantaholic. If you had talked to me a year ago, I would have told you I have a brown hand. However … it just sprang on me! And now I love plants. I have about 15 -20 houseplants (all acquired in the last two months) and seedlings for another 6 herbs, plus small tomato plants, and I’m sprouting seeds for some outside plants.

I may have mentioned that on my not-so-deep corner. Or … oh I wrote a post about it. Dang! I was so trying to come up with something new! Ummmmmm……

Love, love, love sleeping surrounded by down. Down comforter, down pillow … my pillow, in fact, used to be a down/memory foam combination (which I thought would be something this side of heaven but turned out to be WAY to big for my neck) which I took apart and have split into two smaller pillows. Each are super thin, and I love it.

We moved into our house 2 1/2 years ago … and there’s still not real window treatments in our bedroom. It’s a sheet. Hung over the sliding glass door. Shame.

(Notice how all these pertain to my room? That’s where I am and I’m desperately searching for information.)

Ooh. One thing you won’t know … because I only told about two people beyond those who knew by default … the mission trip I went on in the internship (Venezuela ’97) … I was an MA, but was demoted about a week and a half before the end of the trip. For having a messy room. Mitch Stout was my TL (and a lady named … Amy?) and they apparently thought that my lack of cleanliness in the room was reason enough to demote me. It was rather humiliating. Thus the ‘not telling anyone about it.’ But now you know! (PS: keeping my room – or house – clean is the greatest struggle I have in terms of practical things. So … not including character issues. But yeah. Clean room. I guess you may know that, though, having once roomed with me!)

    • alece says:

i hate plants. phew. i needed to get that off my chest.

and seriously? you were demoted from being an MA because of a messy room!? that is tacky and horrible and demoralizing. i am so sorry!

      • annie says:

Hate as in … if they are in someone’s house you feel uncomfortable? Or hate as in you just won’t attempt to grow them yourself?

yes. and THANK YOU for saying that. I still feel the humiliation of it, believe it or not. I felt it was completely unjust, but never protested my case because my room was messy, and it was in the handbook to keep it clean. That, and Dave Hasz met with me about it when I got back. I don’t remember too many details of that conversation. But it seemed everyone over my head agreed with the verdict. I think perhaps they felt there was disrespect involved? I don’t know. My girls were given to another MA and I was stuck in another room. I felt somewhat vindicated in the knowledge that if my TLs had been Matt and Molly Olson (who were my PD/TLs on my previous trip) I would not have been demoted. Matt often talked about how he couldn’t keep his room clean and it drove Molly nuts. And they were PDs. And then IAs. yeah. There’s still a bit of feeling in me on the subject.

        • alece says:

maybe hate was too harsh a word. i won’t (volitionally) have plants in my own house. they don’t give me the creeps or anything. fake plants, on the other hand, kinda do.

i have a few things like that from our year that i carry with me still. i get that…

    • alece says:

i tried to learn to crochet when i was a kid. my attempt at a scarf became a christmas tree ornament. and that was the end of my crochet career.

  21. mandie says:

-I lived in Singapore when I was little. But I haven’t been back since we moved back to Seattle almost 10 years ago.
-Nepal is in my top five places in the world to visit.
-I dyed my hair last week. I’m a redhead now. It was my way of coping with some life changes. haha.

    • alece says:

i love your new avatar pic.

and i get the hair-dye thing. (i was FB-talking with someone today about how i’d love to go eggplant…) it’s like choosing to change something as a stance against all the changes that you don’t have control over.

      • mandie says:

        eggplant? sweet!
yeah. seriously. that’s exactly what last week was for me. it had been in the thought process for a few months…but i finally dyed it after a long week of craziness and some not-so-fun decision making.
i’ll probably mix it up again before i start school and my new life in the fall…something bright and fun. maybe fire-engine red…hmm…

  22. Simone says:

    1. So- you know I love reading… I do have a random interest in authors- ranging from Francine Rivers- Jodi Picoult- Dan Brown – Jeffrey Archer… but my latest reads, surprised me- I randomly started reading the “Twilight” series of books by Stephanie Meyer & was enthralled- it was ridiculous really- I couldn’t put them down. Ask me two months ago if I’d be interested in reading vampire books- most definitely not… but these were good. Yet I would not be tempted to read a typical vampire story… these were actually more of a romance… oddly enough.
    2. As its been a while since you walked the long passages of my house- I’ve covered the walls with scenic photos that D & I have taken on various holidays. Printed & mounted on A4 canvas boxes- I love looking at the pics & being reminded of God’s awesome provision. Of course many have great memories of our (you & me) times away in Cape Town & the US.
    3. I miss you & pray for you daily. Love you Friend.

    • alece says:

they’re making “my sister’s keeper” into a movie. i am thrilled! and i’m midway through picoult’s latest at the moment. loving it, as always.

i hang my head as i ‘fess this: i’ve read the entire twilight series!

hope to see those pics in your hallway sooner rather than later.

thank you for the love, missing, and prayers. means a lot. love you!

  23. Jessica West says:

well I am blogging about my testimony bit by bit so you can read about all that you dont know about me :-)

  24. katie says:

you know how i’m not a big fan of movies? i’ve decided i need a hobby, so i’ve taken up birding. i identified a Greater Blue-eared Glossy-starling last week. i was way excited!!

AND I think I’m a little bit of a connoisseur of cinnamon rolls.

    • alece says:

birding makes you sound like an old lady! but i’m glad you have a hobby. gonna be sucky as the temps keep dropping! yikes!

for the better part of a decade, i always said i had no hobbies. now i consider blogging to be my mine.

i love cinnamon rolls. can i taste-test yours sometime?

      • katie says:

I know! i kind of feel like an old lady.

I’m not so great at making them. But, I like eating other peoples. Oh…idea! When it’s cold and I can’t “bird” I will practice the art of making cinnamon rolls. I’ll keep you posted!

  25. Lisa says:

I had to wear a scoliosis brace 23 hours a day for all of 10th grade, and then only at nights during 11th grade. It was the kind that fit under my chest and over my hips, and I could hide it pretty well under my clothes. It really wasn’t all that bad – it kept me warm on cold German winter days, and also gave me a very small waist! I was very close to getting the one that fit under your chin, so I felt like I got off easy.

I only cheated one day not wearing it. I changed out of it in school and put it in my locker and wore a cute outfit I borrowed from my best friend so I could feel normal for a day. I still remember what I wore – yellow overalls (this was back in ’81, when overalls were big).

Then my family had a car wreck on the Autobahn in 11th grade and my brace was in the trunk and got cracked. At that point I was wearing it only at nights, and my doctor said it was okay not to wear it anymore after that.

  26. Andrew Ronzino says:

That I’m the best brother ever!

  27. Melissa says:

    This shouldn’t be too hard…uhhh….

I’m allergic to fresh mangoes. For some reason though, I did eat them while in the Philippines and never had a reaction.

    • alece says:

i really don’t like mangoes! and everyone seems to love them in SA, so they’re everywhere!

(and the “e” in the plural of mango just looks so wrong to me.)

      • Melissa says:

It looks wrong to me too!

Cheers to the english majors who might actually understand why that “e” is there!

  28. Soliloquy says:

    Seriously? You want MORE??

I’ve never met you in person, you know MORE about me than some of my closest friends do and you want MORE?

    phht.

  29. Roo says:

I still can’t think of a darn thing.

  30. Josh says:

Chana and I became Orthodox Christians last month.

  31. again – you totally crack me up. one sentence post and 94 comments.

    something you don’t know?

i slept in til 10 today (me and the girls). lame fact, i know…

    hmm…

of all the househould chores, i am by far the worst at laundy.

    did you know that already?

    • alece says:

gah! i know! me and my “fake posts” lately. i need to make more time to write.

slept till 10!?! high-five friend! you beat ME! i love it!

i love having house help (back in SA) but i gotta be honest: there are many times i wish i could just do a load of laundry.

  32. gitz says:

I’ve never been to a Starbucks.

I can wiggle my ears [both at the same time, one at a time or alternating ears]

My first horse was named Sparky and he would turn by me saying “left” or “right” … smart horse.

When I was little I used to perform in my backyard like it was my stage and was totally convinced someone from Hollywood would drive by and discover me. In Iowa. In the country. On a blacktop road. Total dreamer.

  33. Charlene says:

I get almost giddy when I walk into any type of supply store…office supply, construction supply, etc…today, I giggled when I went into Dakota…wierd!

  34. Michelle says:

I can’t turn a cartwheel, but always wanted to be a gymnast.
So I married one instead, and all my kids took gymnastics.
    They can all do cartwheels…

    I play the piano.
    Mostly Debussey.
He brings tears to my eyes…

I love to quilt and embroider.
I learned how to crochet recently.
    I haven’t completed a stitching project in years…

    I have mostly sad thoughts.
But I draw very happy pictures.
    For others…

    My oldest is 20.
    My second guy is 17.
    My baby gilr is 14…

    I’ll be 47…tomorrow.
    UGH!!!

    You’re right…that was Simple

    • alece says:

i loved learning these things about you. [i can't cartwheel either. or whistle. hmph.]

what are you doing for your birthday???

      • Michelle says:

I can whistle, but it’s not pretty. My grandpa could whistle like a lark.

My mom is making dinner for the family. A home-cooked meal I won’t have to cook…YAY!!

AND…we’ll probably see the Star Trek movie…not really sure why, except all the people I love most want me to see it…

        • alece says:

it’s officially your birthday. (at least hear on the east coast anyway!) oh happy day! i hope you feel as loved as i know you are.

(and good luck with that star trek movie!)

  35. Shinea says:

I think I’m pretty boring… here are a few things that you may not know:
    I was born without tonsils.
    I don’t eat vegetables.
I love the movie Dreamgirls and a lot of the choreography. (What is it with me and Beyonce?)
I keep a Martha Stewart subscription.
    I love wrapping gifts.
I want to learn to sew.
    I’ve only had one cavity.
    I’ve never had the flu.

OK, I think that’s enough :-) You have the best blog, ever. The end.

  36. Roo says:

OK. :-) Brain is still fried, but I thought of a few random things. I feel like I’ve told you these before, maybe.

… When I was a kid, I wanted to be a palaeontologist for a while. Then I thought about being a vet. In high school, I was positive I would be either a teacher or a doctor.

Also, David once teased me that he’d get me a pet goose one day, since I can’t stand them. For Christmas, he got me a stuffed goose. He’s got my kind of humor. Secretly, I kinda hope I do get that real pet goose. It would be a fun story… and I really want to get over that hatred for those nasty things.

    • alece says:

i can’t NOT think of ross gellar when i hear “palaeontologist”. (FYI – i had to copy/paste that word.)

and i hope to meet your pet goose someday.

  37. The toenail on my middle toe on my right foot? It grows faster than the rest of ‘em…

  38. Roo says:

there’s a lot you don’t know about me.
i just never know what those things are until i run into them. like the expiry date OCDness that i just told you about on your more recent post. boo.
also, i really want a cocker spaniel. american-type, please?
