i’ve completely waited until the last moment to write my monthly newsletter this month. at work early to try and get it done.

  4. I’ll give a shout out to Israel! Its Independence Day here today so we are all tired from celebrating last night, but happy that we have yet another day off!!! Whoo-hoo!

i am loving me some survivor right now. i’m pumped to be able to watch a whole season — it’s been years since i’ve gotten to do that.

is anyone else watching? waddayathink about the dragon slayer?!?! oh.my.lanta.

  6. I have been up all night long watching LOST. I hadn’t seen any since Outreach Season ’05 and now i have a lot of catching up to do. :) i’m in season 2 right now. I think i’ve watched 10 or more episodes since i came home from work.

  7. so the other day, my evil (but otherwise extremely gentle, loving, and preciuos) kitten proudly waltzed in my open front door with a bird in it’s mouth. a baby bird. i freaked out, and then freaked out again when i saw it was still moving. :?

i “saved” it from the stupid gato, but it didn’t make it. so i went out the next morning and bought my cat a collar with a bell on it, so the poor little things can be warned next time.

i’m still not speaking to the cat. the jerk.

I used to cringe at the thought of jr. high kids… and now I can’t wait to get back to my Sunday Schoolers. I love my kids!

  9. roo says:

Oh, and I no longer like very much to be in front of mics. I’m usually behind them, fixing the cords, now. Love my techie life!

  10. roo says:

oh, AND i have an addiction to the game Settlers of Catan. oops. i found somewhere i can play online… and it’s like crack.
    oh, speaking of crack…
    just kidding.

    Open mic…

Celebrate Recovery is an awesome ministry. I’m actually in a group of Christian women who are real and able to admit to defeat…then turn it around to God being the only way to live above the hurts, habits and hangups. No pretense. It’s turning into family. I need family.

…accepting this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it…that I might be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him forever in the next…

    Thanks, Alece.

    go.

This is the first time in the last 2 years that I’ve had the house to myself for dinner. It comes on a perfect day. I’m watching all the sad movies we own and loving the alone time. Somehow all this crying is making me…content.

    done.

  16. hey Alece! Thanks so much for the opportunity to speak my mind! I just got back from 5 weeks in Mexico. God is really working there, and I am so excited for the things that I get to be a part of. I got to work with a brand new ministry called Didaque Ministries! They are really amazing. I would love for you to check them out!

I also lived at an orphanage while I was there called City Of Angels. What a wonderful group of people! Check them out!

  17. i can’t believe you have 63 comments and no post!

    i love you.

    that’s my contribution.

  18. Today I spent all day with my girls. My mom, sister and niece and it was the best day in America yet. I love my family and I seem to keep forgetting to treat them with honor, love and respect for some weird reason. I wonder why that is….

  19. Ed says:

I was just thinking that with blogs, twitter, facebook, etc., I have an open mike to the whole world every day. Whether the world wants to hear me is another story.

I have so many friends I want to talk to each day, in the world outside my door and those I meet on the net, that I need a 28 hour day, at least.

Why does my hair only grow in the back, not the top of my head where I need some. I could grow a pony tail, get an earring, and become the pirate I fantasized as about as a child.

  20. Open mic, eh? How about this: starting last week, I have become head-exploding frustrated with my job situation and especially my manager. And you want to know what? I think I’m better than her.

It’s quite possible that I need an attitude adjustment.

Or a new job. I’d definitely take a new job…

  21. Melissa says:

I wasn’t sure what to write initially, or had the time to. But I found my topic:

A picnic in the rain. Well not so much rain as mist but technicalities. It was wet out.

I was put in charge of organizing the end of the year picnic for our Navigators ministry. We saw that the forcast was for rain today. So I actually prayed for, in my own words, “workable weather.”

The forcast looked much better this morning than last night and so at noon consulting with our campus director we decided to go ahead with the picnic because the rain was supposed to stop. It did but it was still misty.

What was so amazing was that everyone was having an awesome time. The weather did not dampen (pun intended) anyone’s spirits. We ate; there was frisbee, football and a contest to see who could spin around the greatest number of times. It really encouraged me as I was driving home to think about this group who has been so willing and passionate this year to share the gospel on campus. And all they really wanted tonight, was an opportunity to be all together before finals next week and everyone disperses for the summer. It didn’t matter if they got alittle wet, in fact, it will be a picnic people will remember for years…I know I will.

thanks. i tried doing this on my facebook status recently and decided against it but here’s my thoughts.
Why is it ok to announce that you have purchased something you don’t need? Lately I would say it has been things like iphones or blackberries and the like but it can be anything, cars, video games, whatever. We proudly announce this “great” thing that we bought with “our” money. Then our friends say how cool it is and then go off and secretly wish if they only had the funds they could have that thing to be happy too.
Meanwhile the list grows of friends of mine who are overseas without all their funding (that they NEED )doing missionary work. Now I’m not about taking away people’s freedom to do what they wish but for christians shouldn’t it be the opposite?
We don’t mention that we give a percentage of our income to something good every month but its OK to show off a piece of electronic equipment?
Here is the other thing. Now I know I’m painting with a wide brush here but the people who most often say they have the least disposable income, college students, often have the most techie stuff, from phones, to ipods, to laptops. I am confused….you can afford a $300 iphone but you can’t give 10 bucks to your friend overseas?

People give or don’t give for a lot of different reasons and I’m not out to make anyone feel bad, I just wish we would be a little more consistent.

got two more days left in april. you’re golden. at least it won’t be sent late!

  26. alece says:

i so want to hear you sing super trouper!

  27. alece says:

you’ll think of something, annie. come back when you do!

  28. alece says:

    wait…

you celebrate the night BEFORE independence day instead of the night OF independence day? isn’t that like celebrating the fourth of july on the third?

    what’d you do to celebrate?

  29. roo says:

SO true! ‘Cept all I did to celebrate was to stay up late for fireworks and talking to friends back home. The outside world is busy and kinda scary right now in J-lem. Ha!

  30. Christen says:

no…. you don’t. But Hannah sure does! :)

  31. alece says:

i would pay to hear you sing it.

i’d pay double if you were gonna wear a super trouper outfit.

  32. Christen says:

    hmmmm… how much we talkin’?

  33. alece says:

    how much would it take?

  34. Christen says:

I know yo’ Daddy is rich (lots of cattle I hear), but I think even He’d scoff at that price.

  35. alece says:

nicely done, christen. nicely done. :)

  36. All the holidays start on sundown the night before, cuz technically thats the beginning of the new day. Even like Shabbat starts around 5ish on Friday-5ish on Sat.

There were huge festivals in both J-lem and TA. Here we had fireworks, they set up a huge stage in one of the squares not too far from my apart. and had shows etc. It was really quite cool. They did this a couple weeks back too for TA’s 100th anniversary. We just like to party here, any excuse! hehehe

  37. roo says:

Hannah, I know LOST is fantasmagorical… but it sounds like you need an intervention, dear! ACK! Too funny that you’ve watched so much so quickly – LOST really is addicting.
Now if only I could find a place online to do the same with CSI: Miami……..

  38. alece says:

holy crow, miss hannah. woman on a mission!

  39. alece says:

    oh yeah. i forgot! :)

i’m glad you enjoyed the celebration and then had the day off afterward. that’s a pretty sweet deal actually.

  40. alece says:

i’m glad i could be one of said friends back home!

  41. alece says:

i’m actually catching up on the current season of csi: miami on the cbs website…

  42. roo says:

I’m actually on season 4. It’s bad – I started watching season 1 when it was already season 5 airing on tv. Sooooo, I tried to get caught up a year ago, and failed. Try #2, here it goes!

  43. alece says:

GAH! so gross. poor bird. poor you!

good thinking on the bell collar.

  44. roo says:

Anytime. I mostly meant you… you and David are some of my best friends back home. You make me smile.

  45. alece says:

a friend just loaned me seasons 1 and 2 on DVD. i’m looking forward to watching… although i must admit that marathons are way more fun with someone else than alone…

  46. roo says:

I gave up on survivor… there was too much drama for me… I think I ever watched 2 episodes. But I’ll never forget the “fishmonger” lady from watching in SA with you! It makes me laugh still.

  47. roo says:

True. I’d love to watch with you – H is my fave!

  48. alece says:

your comment made me smile really big. thank you, friend!

[okay, me and my nicknameness... i actually randomly typed "roofie" and then thought better of it. ha!]

  49. alece says:

oh come on – you should give it another chance. can watch the last 3 seasons (if i remember correctly) on cbs.com. it’s so brilliant! and the cinematography is incredible.

ah yes, the fishmonger. i’d forgotten about her. and about the fact that you joined in for some survivor parties back in the day. ha. good times, good times…

  50. alece says:

he makes me laugh. i kinda have a love/hate relationship with H.

and it just needs to be said that delko is mighty fine to look at…

  51. roo says:

Yeah… Delko was my favorite part. And I was SO BITTER when they killed off Speed. I almost quit watching.

  52. roo says:

Wait? Delko was my fave? No. Favorite good-looking guy. H just was my hero – one of those “feel-good” guys… protector of all. ;-)

  53. alece says:

i hear you on H – that’s what i love about him. [but i need to admit that his hair this season is driving me crazy.]

i’ve missed a whole chunk of seasons. i don’t even remember Speed right now. yikes.

  54. roo says:

Yeah, well… you’ll love him. He’s only in seasons 1-3. And… I just ruined it for you. But I’m just so sad about it still. Ha!
Oh, and I just found a place to keep watching. So, season 4, here I come!

  55. alece says:

where did you figure out you can watch it online? after watching seasons 1&2, i’ll be ready to keep going!

  56. roo says:

alluc.org has links to every episode… ever. just some of them have chinese subtitles. if you can get over that, it’s pretty decent! :-D

  57. alece says:

thanks for the tip. i’ll file that away somewhere for when i “need” it!

  58. mmmm……..Delko!! just got lost there in a day dream for a second. He is my flav!

  59. alece says:

    that’s a gift! middle-schoolers are a tough crowd!

  60. roo says:

I *wish* I could watch on CBS… stupid being overseas. And, I don’t think I’d bother to watch unless it was with someone else who liked it. Same with Amazing Race – only fun if I watch it with someone like you who gets into it. :-)

  61. alece says:

definitely more fun with someone else.

i’ve never watched a whole season of amazing race. i would if i could though. i can get into things fairly easily — i watched one episode when i was in seattle, and was instantly already cheering for people. sheesh.

  62. alece says:

you used to like being in front of mics?

  63. alece says:

i’ve heard the name, but i have no idea what it is.

and speaking of crack… were you thinking what i think you were thinking??

  64. roo says:

I did. I still do – I love singing… and join my home church’s worship team whenever I’m home for a Sunday or two. Mmmm.

  65. roo says:

I was thinking of “that’s what she said” jokes. So maybe? Ha!

  66. alece says:

oh yeah… i forgot you sing… makes me smile.

  67. roo says:

SO funny! This made me laugh… I’m glad you told me – even though you thought better of saying it!

  68. roo says:

Yeah, forgetting is okay. I can only kinda sing – I’m more a harmonies person than a lead. :-D

  69. annie says:

Okay okay. so I do actually have something to say.

(weird whistle) tap, tap, tap. Is this on?

    Okay.

I got locked in the garage yesterday.

And you have to understand what happened.

My garage door is broken. It will not lift at all, and only comes forward about 6 inches at the top when you try. The door to my garage has one of those security locks which doesn’t let you know the dang thing is locked until it’s too late. (I’m not really sure how it’s better for security, as this is the 4th time something like this has happened … to me … and never to a burglar.)

It was about a half an hour before I was supposed to leave for work, and I was just putting something away in the garage. I didn’t think, “oh, the door is locked,” until it was too late. I thought of it as the door was shutting. Of course. At first I thought – no big deal, I’ll just go out the garage and in my front door (which luckily was unlocked). The door locking behind me has happened before, and that’s how I always solved it.

But the garage door was broken.

    And I didn’t have a key.

    Or a phone.

As the realization of my predicament dawned on me, I thought, Wow, I’m going to be in here for several hours. I have no way of letting anyone know I’m in here, and my husband won’t get home ’til late tonight. I’m going to miss my shift tonight … and I can’t call them to tell them why! Wow. What in the world am I going to do for several hours in my garage?

I thought perhaps I could get the garage door open … it was only kidding those other times when it wouldn’t, right?

    Nope.

But … the top did open that six inches, and there was a ladder placed conveniently right next to the door. So I climbed the ladder thinking perhaps my neighbor (who is very nice but only shows his face once in the afternoons and I had already seen him) would venture out of his home and I could enlist his aid. That neighbor was not outside, but another neighbor was. I’d never met him. He was about 60 and was out walking a cute little Pomeranian.

Being, of course, very shy, I hesitated to ask him for help – I mean, I don’t know the guy! But he was getting farther away, and I thought, I’m going to be stuck in here for many hours if I don’t at least try. So I got up over the door, and yelled through the little opening.

    Excuse me, sir??

I bobbed my head back down to see if I had got his attention. He was looking in my general direction with a very puzzled look on his face.

“I’m right here.” I stuck my whole arm through the opening and wagged.

“This is kind of funny,” I almost couldn’t talk plainly, I was starting to laugh, “but I’m stuck in my garage.”

He stared slightly. Then said, “Yeah, that is funny. Let me get my dog and I’ll be right there.”

So he slowly picked up his dog and headed over to the garage. I’m thinking, He’s going to think he just has to lift the garage door. So as he got close I stuck my head back in the opening and explained the problem.

“My garage door is broken, actually. It won’t open. And the door inside locks automatically. Do you think you could go in my house and let me out from the inside?”

“Sure. Let me put my dog away and I’ll be right there.”

    So he did that.

As he did, I was picturing this scene from the outside: girl calling, waving erratically from the top of a garage door. It seemed like something straight out of a comedy I would die laughing from. I started giggling hysterically at myself.

He put his dog away, then went through my house to open the door from the inside.

“Thank you! I appreciate your help!” I couldn’t help laughing and neither could he. I mean … how often does someone get locked in their garage??!

As my cousin said, “Now that’s talent!”

    (close mic)

Oh and I just blogged that. haha!

  71. alece says:

    oh.my.lanta!

seriously!? what a fantastic story. i am so glad you came back and told it.

and that you had a friendly, non-sociopathic neighbor.

  72. alece says:

i don’t think i ever knew that, jessica. that is fantastically awesome. God is faithful.

    i’d join you with when a man loves a woman… such a good tear-jerker.

  76. alece says:

TARA! you came out of hiding!?! seriously!?! i am so glad you did.

what a list! what a jam-packed next few months you have ahead of you. thailand?! think of me if you ride an elephant.

congrats on graduation so soon. yessssssss!

  79. alece says:

    …only….sixteen….more….days…..

  84. alece says:

  85. alece says:

    that was beautiful!

thank you for coming and sharing. seriously.

  86. annie says:

    I know, right? Whew!

  87. Kelly says:

I made (canned) chichen soup and grilled cheese – mozzarella on rye. mmm….and then watch four movies. all in all, a great night!

Tragically, I’ve never seen when a man loves a woman, I’ll have to see if it’s rentable!

  88. alece says:

you know, i never thought about the fact that it’s socially acceptable to “show off” everything we spend money on EXCEPT for things like donations. i mean, there’s the whole matthew 6 your giving should be done in secret thing. i don’t think our giving (or any type of personal sacrifice for that matter) needs to be bragged about, but attention can be given to the causes and visions worthy of our investments.

it all comes down to priorities. and they are evidenced in both what we choose to spend money on and in what we choose to talk about.

i wonder what the evidence in my life shows. hmmm…

  89. jace says:

Yah I agree with you. I think my issue is I grew up learning (mostly from my Dad) that most of the stuff that we strive after is pretty worthless. Not in a spiritual sense but an intrinsic sense. No matter how useful a certain phone may be or nice a TV may be we really don’t need it and so my dad would not buy it. I was 2-4 years behind on everything at best.
Most people grow up with the opposite idea that the more stuff you have your happier if only because the neighbors and your friends will look better on you.
So I’m left confused why everyone is so excited about expensive electronic things and don’t see why Christians at least just automatically don’t give more to their friends who are in ministry.
I do think that at best our society in America raises us in general to have flawed priorities. Its an annoying issue….

  91. alece says:

    i don’t know.
