name that aussie
*EDITED @ 10 PM*
My new GPS has changed my life forever.
Seriously.
Now he she just needs a name. Yes, he’s a he. Normally he’d have been a she, but I wasn’t particularly fond of any of the she-voices. So he’s a he. An Australian he in fact. I found a she voice I like! AND she’s Aussie, too!
Some of you have already suggested names on my Facebook page (and even via text message!). Moses, Kumquat, Beaufort, Piper, and McGyver are all in the running.
I thought maybe we should cast the net a little wider here at the Grit.
So… Whatcha got for me? What should I call my Aussie he-man she-girl GPS?
(I feel bad for making y’all suggest boy names all day and then I go and change genders on you. My poor GPS has an identity crisis, what can I say!? So… we’re now officially taking girl name ideas. And, well, I guess my G to the PS may just end up being whichever gender has the best name option!)

Jack Kendall
I vote for a name containing “Dr.” something. Perhaps “Dr. Bob” or “Dr. Vadim” (after the Australian reality show star, Outback Jack. But something with “Dr.” in it because your GPS is supposed to be the expert right?
@moweezle says:
I think it should be Foster (only pronouncing it with the Aussie accent). Every time I think of an Australian accent the commercial about Fosters Beer pops in my head and I can hear the Australian accent saying “Fosters, Australian for beer.” Its just the strong accent that gets me every time! (and its not too bad beer either). hehehehe
Angus? Fergus (or Fergie, for short)? Bertram? Alistair?
Go to Yahoo and type in “Australian baby names,” and you can even see the meaning of different names.
The best one I heard for a female GPS was Christine Caine’s for hers: “Matilda.” You know, from Australia’s unofficial national song, Waltzing Matilda.
Aaron is a popular Aussie name, But the name needs to fit. An example is my youngest son Josh his name is Joshua but he is a Josh.

XXXX (pronounced fourecks)
Walk-about

Jack
Big Boss Man
Drover

ha. “big boss man” made me laugh.
@chrystieecole says:
Hmm…fun! How about Gabriel?
How about Ozzy, since that’s the way “Aussie” is pronounced? Sydney?
The name for a baby koala is Joey – that’s male!
The names of the koalas at the Cleveland Zoo are “Omaroo,” which means “a beautiful view;” and “Allambie,” which is Aboriginal for “to remain a while.”
This is fun!
Oooh ohh… I still like McGyver shortened to Mic…but I just thought about Crocodile Dundee! You could call him Dundee, Master of all things roadage :)
I’m kind of like Beufort! :) But, there’s also Henry.
@danielleH says:
I like Henry too.
Mick… as in Crocodile Dundee. I mean, he IS Australian, which makes it so passe. And he never gets lost in the city, which makes it absolutely ironic. Heh.
You know, I really like Beaufort. If I ever have a male GPS-guy… who is also an Aussie… I’d name him Beaufort. But Sexy Map Lady remains. Even when she frustrates me, she does it in a sultry voice. Hmpfh. ;-)
Oh, and Piper would totally confuse me… I have a really good friend who I call Piper. I’d be lost every time you talked about your GPS (ironic, no?).
1. filet o fish
2. Sir Robert kinter.
(yeah. Say that with an aussie accent. It’s incredible.)
I thought long and hard and this is what I came up with…
ready?…Heraldo (is that even how you spell it?) :)
Wally (short for Wallabee)
Okay, it’s official: I’m definitely thinking about naming a friend’s GPS system MUCH. TOO. MUCH.
:)
ooooh I like Wally. yes yes I do.
Humphrey!
Or…or or! Think of this!
1. Bret
2. Jermaine
3. Murry!
Go Flight! I know they from New Zealand, but it’s close enough!
Ohhh, I do like Murry/Murray. Good point.
way to go, bean! you made me laugh with your suggestions!
Katie totally just found these voices on her Tom Tom too! Sooo funny. I think right now it’s a New Zealand (english) female accent… I want the irish accent.
@traceepersiko says:
Biscuit
Rusk
Guido
Foster – cups up
Boy Scout
that’s two votes for foster… hmmm…
Name him after that sexy guy on ps I love you.
i am in love with gerard butler’s mouth. serious. between his accent and crooked smile… mmmmm….
gerard butler makes me blush and then feel guilty that I blushed. mmmmmmmYEAHbaby.
AHHHHH!
I’m at a loss for words. Now I have to spend 2 more days thinking and thinking. That makes me happy. I like this game.
Okay, so after brainstorming some more, I like:
Rayden (Ray for short – could be a unisex name, too!)
Elsie (El or Ellie for “short”)
Vayle (You could call her Vay for short and say Oy, Vay! when driving!!!!)
and…
I’m still thinking.
Hehehehe! I just cracked myself up, reading over my “Oy, Vay!” joke again.
I’m bad.
niiiiiice!
and i say “oi vey” pretty often….
I know, right!? So does David – so it’s an absolute miracle that I’m not saying it every two seconds. :-D
@danielleH says:
Paco, the 2nd
or Paca haha!
So, now that’s it’s changed to a female voice – I vote for “Princess” something or another. As you can probably see, I really like titles for things like this (simply because I think titles in real like are a bit ridiculous). :)

It’s easier when it was a guy
i agree. guy names are better. hmmm…
Now I’m up way too late… and thinking about your GPS. Girl… I’m going to sleep. I’ll think about this some other time! Sheesh! (hehe)
Adelaide
Victoria
Miranda
Kylie
Alice (for Alice Springs)
Sydney
Matilda
Cate, Nicole, Toni, Poppy or Naomi (all famous Australian actresses)
Jai Ho lol
I do like Adelaide. I was thinking that (all over again) while I filled out my map for Australia on Friday night. :-D
“filled out my map for australia”… ????
Geography class this summer – mail correspondence course… this unit is on Russia & the Pacific Rim (including Australia and NZ).
wellwaddayaknow!
you should be all up on some interesting aussie (town) names…
Lisa was full of ‘em. Adelaide, Sydney, Victoria… :-) I can’t even think of any to add!
Edith.
It just came to me.
I know!
this is so super funny! ;o)
I call our she-GPS a big B**** sometimes because she annoys me. She always wants us to “make a legal u-turn” and I ask Jake to shut her the crap up!
I like Sally. “Sally says take a left in…. ONE….HUNDRED….FEET.”
freaking GPS.
PRESS RELEASE
after a brief but intense meeting with my Public Relations Specialist, it has been decided that my GPS shall go by the name Sydney.
her name was so chosen because:
– as the largest city in Australia, Sydney seems a fitting choice for my Aussie-accented navigator.
– i have a girl-crush on Sydney Bristow.
– should my GPS undergo yet another sex change, Sydney would still be a suitable name.
she is hereby christened Sydney, but she’ll likely be called Syd’z more often than not.
thanks for playing along, everybody!
I think you should call her Gertie, or Gretta.
I know you’ve already named her but how about the Aussie euphemism for a woman…. Sheila!
i can’t believe you were the first person to suggest that!!!
(and welcome to the Grit!)
Maybe I’m the only Aussie who has commented? ;)
i think you very well might be!
