known

What are you known for?

My husband is notorious for asking that question when we visit a restaurant. He wants to know what’s uniquely theirs that keeps people coming back for more. And then he usually orders it. He wants to taste and see for himself.

Sometimes it’s bit him in the butt. Like the time in Sicily he ended up with an entire fish—bones, head, insides, and all! But most of the time he really enjoys whatever it is they’re known for.

I’ve been thinking lately about his famous question—but in the context of me. What am I known for?

I could easily tell you what I want to be known for. But what I actually am? That takes some more thinking. I think it’s a question worth knowing the answer to, though.

How about you? What are you known for?

Maybe it’s your contagious laughter, or your gentle spirit. Perhaps it’s your loyalty, your passion for God, or your spontaneity. It could be your authenticity, or your love of baking. Or even your much-applied minty lip gloss.

Ruminate for a minute, and then let us know what you think. I’ll be back later to answer the question for myself.

What are you known for?

    that I talk too much
    having a generous spirit
I hope for funny, but will settle for witty
sometimes using my scary “teacher voice,” lecturing instead of engaging in a dialogue

None of us are all good… or all bad.

I guess I am known for being a good listener. I am the girl who knows about sports, especially women’s college basketball. I also end up as the person who is asked about where to find scripture. I may not know exactly but I can usually get you to the right book and within a few chapters.

  3. (where are these comments from the other day?)

[they're getting imported in... slowly but surely. 17,000 comments is a lot of ground to cover! they'll make it back over here -- no worries! meantime, you can still see 'em here.]

What Am i known for? Nothing ( to the best of my not inconsiderable knowledge) ;-)

I rather fancy the few who take the time to get to come close to knowing me would all give a different answer to that q should they be asked.

What do i WANT/Would LIKE to be known for? Uncompromising Love ( not sure exactly how that’s coming along) :-)

By ‘uncompromising’ i mean being wiling to say what i truly believe is in another’s best interest – even if it may cause some temporary hurt in the process. Recognising the hurt and balancing that with the potential benefit another may gain.

p.s. – the new look seems pretty good :-) Could you maybe add a litle more texture to the header for ‘grit’ and maybe put in a sparkle or two for the ‘glory’?? just a thought.

I’m lovin’ the new look, friend!

    Let’s see…I’m known for…
    doing impressions of people
my love of stationery and handwritten notes
    keeping in touch
being a loyal friend (or at least I strive to be)
    my appreciation of differences
    my OCD-ness
my inability to take a compliment

I look forward to reading the other comments once they’re imported in. By the way, I LOVE the header picture!

I clicked “submit” accidentally and can’t figure out how to edit…I was just going to say that this is a hard question and those are just from my perspective. I would be interested to hear others’ response to this question.

  9. my cookies.
my wild but gorgeous kids =)
(i love my minty gloss but i don’t think i ‘m known for it)
    asking intense questions, i guess.

    this one was hard.

  10. Came over from our bud Gitz, this is a great question…
I think it probably has to do with my 4 amazing kids and my husband~
I only ever wanted to be a wife and mom and started at 20, no career or even great job…but I’m a nut for my fam!
(This made being an empty nester quite difficutl by the way :)
    Love your blog! Happy Monday

Great question!! The “easy button” is to answer what I would like to be known for. The “not-so-easy” button for me is to answer what I am known for. That means I have to answer a personal question and now we are entering into my non-comfort zone. Hmmmmmm…..I would say I am nice. Most people tell me I am nice.

  13. gitz says:

Ooooo, Sassafrass… you got a fancy new blog!!!! :)

    I love it.

  14. Ed says:

I like the look of your new blog(?).

My best guess is that I am know for my love of music, a sense of humor, sometimes being insensitive in what I say to others. I also think I am know for being either very confident, or very egotistical, depending on how you talk to.

  15. brainteaser says:

    Hi Alece!

Wow, great question. Hard to answer though.

I think I’m known differently in different places. In my hometown where I am seldom seen (because I go home only five times a year), the people have a frozen picture of me. I think they still think of me as the girl who has gone to UP.

In the workplace, I think I am generally known for speaking up my mind. And for my crazy antics, hehe. And my one-liners!

I think I am also known for my penchant for spaghetti strap blouses, and for my slender figure. I am usually referred to as ‘payat na babae’ or thin/svelte lady.

  16. Killer chocolate chip cookies. People come out of the woodwork when they hear I’m making a batch. A neighbor considered buying me one of those neon Krispy Kreme signs so everyone would know when hot ones were ready!

Okay, so that’s not as cool as being known for a compassionate heart or a generous spirit. BUT, it’s been great for building community AND I’ve spent many hours talking with teenagers over cookies and milk. I’m a lucky girl.

  17. my big laugh.
my big voice despite my small frame.
    my odd-ball sense of humor.

  18. I’ve been putting off commenting…I guess because I’m not sure I like my answer. I think I’m probably known for being sarcastic, for taking lots of pictures, for being organized and maybe bossy. I wish I could give you a different answer…

Thinking of you – hope you’re hanging in there!

It’s ok to take some quiet ‘me’ time when it is needed. Be Thankful in all things Leesh :-)

( Even when that seems difficult! to do)

Catch you when you feel like coming ‘back :-)

    You are loved! :-)

Okay, wow am I ever missing you … can’t wait ’til you’re back and the blog construction is all finished. It’s looking pretty gorgeous, by the way. I’m in MAJOR withdrawl, however! :)

What am I known for? I’m still pondering that one. One thing I am known for is being outspoken. I don’t always agree with what seems natural or that things go the way the world dictates. I know my Jesus never fails me, so I’m not afraid to talk about it and my experiences with Him in my life. That doesn’t always match someone elses ideas or “reality,” so I am learning to share Him and be okay with where I am with our Daddy and where others are. We are all learning in this walk together. Bottom line, He is good ALL the time! :)

    Known for? Me?

Hmmm…red hair, freckles and a Texas drawl.

i was surprised to be known as the guy who knew (random) stuff at thrive. i didn’t mind it (I enjoy answering questions I think) but I don’t think I had ever been in an environment before that really brought it out. At the end of the day realizing I’m reasonably smart is a nice self-esteem boost any day of the week.

  24. roxx says:

Or this saying, “Really, this is the last thing I am going to say.” :)

  25. Alex says:

My squeaky laugh…and being quiet [untill you get to know me] and not speaking up and telling my feelings when I should..having a hard time saying no….

and i LOVE the make over!!! Looks good! :-)

  26. raisin bran says:

    I’m having MAJOR friend withdrawals!!!!!!

    Love you friend.

  27. Cindy Beall says:

I’m known for being the woman who was cheated on by her pastor husband and that she was able to forgive and stay married.

I don’t mind, really. My life is not my own. And if my earthly time is defined by this and it not only brings glory to my Maker but brings freedom to others, I can endure.

I asked God a long time ago why He chose me to do things for His kingdom. His answer? “Because you said yes.”

  28. You promise not to tell ?? Being a mischievious stinker!

  35. I think I’m known for a “sparkle.” At work my friends and boss always tell me that I sparkle, in my eyes and in my attitude because I’m always happy. I think it’s the joy of the Lord.

  36. TheNorEaster says:

Hmm. Well, I don’t know. What AM I known for…?

  37. Christen says:

ewwww… I don’t even want to know what I’m known for. Unfortunately I highly doubt it’d be anything I’d *want* to be known for. :( It’s a good question to ask though. Self-examination can be a difficult but good discipline. xxx
