happy cinco!
My very own Cinco de Me-o…
1. I am the messiest toothbrusher ever. Seriously.
2. I often get caught singing, humming, or dancing when I don’t even realize I’m doing it. Like in the grocery store. Or when someone’s praying.
3. I usually wait to go to the bathroom until my bladder is about to explode. Partially because I’m lazy, and partially because I’m afraid of missing out on something.
4. I wish I’d kept track of how many beds I’ve slept in over the past year. There have been many.
5. If you spend any time with me, you’ll quickly discover that I looooove Mexican food. (And beverages.)
Your turn to share 5 random things about yourself.
Happy Cinco de Mayo!

1) I always have to go pee when i am on the phone with people just about ALWAYS…IT’S pretty awkward..
2) I always think to hard when I drive so people always find it to be quite funny; I call it my drive-think face
3) I have a weird habit in smelling EVERYTHING; random objects, food, water…it’s quite funny
4) I always DANCE & sing everywhere I go…it just makes life more fun
5) I always find myself bringing the kid out of me when I watch Alece & Silas these days..it includes rolling on the ground, playing with stuffed animals & even climbing & making forts..haha
I LOVE YOU friend :)
@gritandglory says:
i smell things too. but i think i touch things more. i pretty much touch everything i walk by in a store…
I do too, Alece. Actually, I have a huge problem with PICKING things up and placing them somewhere else entirely when I change my mind.
Yep, I touch everything too. Even pictures – running my hands along things in the photo.
And I LOVE Mexican food! I’ll have to look you up next time I am down there and go eat some with you!
@bahava says:
1. I always find myself touching things in stores especially clothes sometimes even before I realize there’s a no touch sign.
2. I take forever to decide what to order and then after I’ve ordered I try to convince myself that it’s going to be good regardless
3. I prefer drinking out of mugs than cups and using small silver wear and plates instead of big ones
4. I always ask for a sample at Coldstone so that I can get a taster spoon to use for my ice cream
5. I count while I’m drinking water or juice. Usually to like 10 or 15.
@gritandglory says:
i take for.ev.er. to decide what to order as well!
1) I do everything in exactly the same order in the shower every single day.
2) I looove the ocean but can’t stand dry sand on my feet so if I’m there, I have to sit in a chair with my feet touching the water.
3) I heart Richard Simmons. I mean, I really, really love the guy. Once you get past all the sparkly exterior (which I love as well!), you see a guy who genuinely loves people. I just can’t get enough of that. I even bought Disco Sweat when I was in college, not b/c I wanted to exercise but b/c I think I wanted to show support for Richard and the people he helps. I know: weird.
4) When I was little, I used to wait in anticipation for the animals in the woods to interact with me like they did Snow White. I’m still waiting.
5) I won’t write with a pen that doesn’t have a cap. I just can’t. It’s like it throws my hand off balance or something. Maybe even the universe. If a pen is missing a cap, it goes directly to the garbage. I’m sorry, little pen.
Off to wish my bro a happy birthday on this wonderful Cinco de Mayo!
@gritandglory says:
i LOVE your list, nikki! ha!
richard simmons?! oh my dang, that makes me laugh!
My husband bought me Richard’s autobiography and I just finished reading it. Let me know if you want to borrow it… ;)
@bajanpoet says:
1. I find that I always have to pee AS SOON AS I WALK THROUGH THE DOOR of my house. Even if I didn’t feel like doing it in the car coming home.
2. A little bit of OCD – EVERY time I pass the refrigerator once I’ve made a jug of sweet drink … I HAVE to drink a little. From the jug (ok I shouldn’t say that if I’m inviting any bloggy friends to my house…. ) Anyhow… there it is. My wife is always livid that the drink goes fast and she doesn’t get any….
3. I spend more time on my computer than doing anything else. Another thing I have to do once I step into the house is go and check my email – even although I’ve just checked my email before I’ve left work … and it only takes 15 mins to get from my office to my house.
4. I’ve almost stopped drinking hot beverages in the morning. I know that it’s supposed to make the air move and get you to belch and stuff … but come on, I live in the tropics…. It’s ALWAYS hot except around Christmas…. I drink cold drinks and the same bowel movements happen, so…. here’s to Sprite in the morning!
5. I LIVE on my Gmail chat. I am chatting to someone during the course of my day ALL THE TIME. I would LOVE to exchange gmail info with any blog friends who have it, so that I could chat on Gmail with you too…. some of my very best friendships have been nurtured with the social care of Gmail chats – EVERY. SINGLE. DAY.
@gritandglory says:
i think it’s definitely okay that you don’t drink something hot in the mornings considering where you live!
@bajanpoet says:
Yeah, that’s what I said!
I DO drink hot stuff when I’m in the mood … but usually it’s a cold drink…
@nateonamission says:
mmmm GMail … Love it. so good.
@bajanpoet says:
Yeah …. for real. So can we be Gmail buddies too? :)
@maryjohess says:
1. I always rub my belly before I step into the shower every morning. I think I subconsciously hope it will make it go away.
2. I have to sleep with a pillow between my legs and on my right side – if I end up in another position, fine, but I must start out and fall to sleep on my right side.
3. My pinky toes don’t really have toe nails to boast of. :(
4. I’m addicted to my blackberry. There. I said it. (Don’t tell hubby)
5. Coffee is a necessity – not a want. Amen.
@gritandglory says:
your list cracks me up, mary!
@pa3cia says:
ditto #2 and #3. ;)
I laughed out loud with number #1
I love my margaritas made with fresh limes, silver tequila and salt!
I love my husband’s homemade mango, ginger salsa.
I love the way habaneros burn at the end instead of the beginning.
My husband and I once took a salsa class…it made for great laughs!
I prefer homemade tortillas over store bought!
(Happy Cinco!)
~kristin
@gritandglory says:
love your mexican themed list!
i’m a no-salt margarita girl. and i WISH i could dance salsa. (i keep eating more in the hopes that it will make me a better dancer… not working yet.)
@cassgirl says:
1. I’m always looking for my next picture.
2. First thing I take off when I get home is my bra (even before my shoes)
3. Sweet coffee in the morning, straight black and strong at night
4. I miss my mom’s Chanel #5, and sometimes when I am missing her, I’ll run into a dept store for a squirt in the air.
5. Radio full blast in my car a must!
@PrudyChick says:
#2 is going to be looming in my mind when we meet. :)
@cassgirl says:
:=) When we meet… I can’t wait. (just the thought makes me smile)
Ill make sure I am strapped in of course!!
@PrudyChick says:
LOL
@gritandglory says:
hahaha! i’m with prudence… i’ll be on the lookout for #2! ;)
@cassgirl says:
Ohmycow!!
What did I start?!!!
In my state I need to stay strapped in at all times, but when I get home..
The Mama’s gotta breathe!….. just sayin!
1) I love to fold laundry – but I hate to put it away. I really, really love to fold.
2) I firmly believe that there will be crunchy peanut butter, chips & salsa waiting for me in my mansion in heaven.
3) Everyone thinks I’m an extrovert, but my introverted side is way stronger – I feel like I have to play the part of an extrovert most of the time to please my peers.
4) I like to use pens until they die. I never, ever throw a pen away, unless I am certain it is past its last leg.
5) I often sleep with a stuffed donkey — it’s kind of like a pillow for my neck, but really, it’s a stuffed donkey (his name is “ashes”. . .it used to be “ass” but had to PG it for the nieces)
@gritandglory says:
more introverted, eh? you never need to play the extrovert with me. seriously…
and tell me you don’t eat your crunchy PB with your chips and salsa! ;)
(i’ll be thinking of you when i get to hug cathi tomorrow. so weird to only have one of you at a time!)
First. How many beds you have slept in, I have been reading about a loose woman in Jesus time and she is always inviting men into her bed so when I read how many beds you have slept in it just came across the other way. Hehe sorry.
@gritandglory says:
oops! definitely didn’t mean THAT!
1. I talk to myself…often! I’m used to talking to the kids so when I’m in a store alone I find myself talking and laughing at myself..
2.I can’t stand shoes! If I could wear flip flops all year I totally would. My feet have the need to breathe!
3. I too love Mexican food and the Mojito that goes along with it.. But what I really like is to put sour cream on it. Actually I could prolly eat sour cream on everything ;D
4.I’m addicted to Farmville on Facebook.. even if I just get on to feed my dog. But if you tell anyone, I will deny it! lol
5. Alece, as far as my news…. think Mini-Me! And I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to be a mom to a 10 yr old and an infant! :D
@pa3cia says:
i like you!
i talk to myself and i wear flip flops all day, every day too!
*hi-5*
:D
@gritandglory says:
CONGRATS!!! wow, girl! i thought maybe that’s what it was! we need a phone date soon.
and really? i never would’ve pegged you as a farmville girl!
Thanks Lecers! I would love to talk to you! Anytime on a Monday is good for me! Just let me know! And as far as Farmville….. well all my rink friends are doin it! ;D Love ya!
Hi there … we had a baby in December. She is now 5 months old and precious. Our biggers girls are 8 and 10 years old. You can do it. It’s fun! We should talk. Oh, and congratulations!
Debra! Any advice you can give me would be great! It just seems to be surreal! I know this little one will fit, it’s just hard to wrap my mind around it some days! Talk to you soon!
Hey Stacey … just need your email address and we can chat! Looking forward to it. If you wouldn’t mind, hop on over to my blog and leave it in the cat comments. So much fun is coming your way! :)
@gritandglory says:
love you for reaching out to my dear friend! thank you, debra!
Hey Stacey … if you aren’t comfortable leaving your email on the blog, Alece has it, so you can get it from her, too. Looking so forward to talking with you!
Hi Debra! I did go to your blog! You have a beautiful family! I was having a hard time finding where to go to leave a comment so I can leave my email….
Thank you for that sweet compliment. Just comment on the post with the cat (guess I didn’t communicate that very well … sorry) and I’ll get it. My comments have to be owner approved to post, so I’ll erase your email and it won’t get posted to the public. Looking forward to talking to you!
@gritandglory says:
debra is WONDERFUL, stacey! so glad you girls are gonna connect!
Aaaah Alece, you TOTALLY made my day! :) Love you!
1. I can’t walk in a straight line. Anywhere.
2. I love the way hip-hop makes me dance every. single. time. I just can’t get enough of Mr. Timberlake or Kid Cudi.
3. I am a night owl which doesn’t bode well with my early mornings. Waking up at 5-5:30 this year to make it to school on time has only fostered an incredibly unhealthy relationship with coffee.
4. If a Mexican restaurant doesn’t have homemade tortillas, I won’t go back. Growing up in San Antonio left me highly snotty about what is and what isn’t Tex-Mex.
5. One of my biggest pet-peeves is noisy eaters. I can’t handle it. Oh and noisy breathers – ugh. Just thinking about it makes my eye twitch.
@PrudyChick says:
I can’t walk straight lines either. There is a water fountain at work I always run into. That or my husband. Or a wall.
Relationships with coffee are always healthy. ;-D
I don’t even know why. I mean, this has been my whole life. And I was in gymnastics! (for like a day) Russ gets so irritated with it – so much so that sometimes he makes me stop so he can step in front of me. lol. apparently it just doesn’t work to have someone walk beside you when you can’t even walk straight. ;)
I grew up in Houston and I’m somewhat of a TexMex snob myself. It just doesn’t do me much good since in live in VA. I won’t even try to describe what passes for Mexican around here!
Terri, I can only imagine. I have family in South Carolina – it’s just sad, really.
@gritandglory says:
“just thinking about it makes my eye twitch” – ha ha ha!
@mandythompson says:
1. I re-arranged my office yesterday. Well… my co-worker moved to another office, so I got this one all to myself.
2. I’m supposed to take 5 vitamins 2x a day, but I’m lucky to take them once a day.
3. I have three loads of clean laundry either on the floor or in the basket in my living room. Domesticity? I lack it.
4. The staff is studying James together this month.
5. One of my favorite restaurants here is called “4th of May” but I didn’t eat there yesterday. :(
awww, man! Now you have to wait another whole year to eat at that restaurant! :-)
@gritandglory says:
i’ve read your comment 3 times. i’ve had to sound out “domesticity” each time.
@mandythompson says:
But I think I got it right… ?right?
1. I, too, get caught singing or humming when I don’t even realize it.
2. Most people have the perception of me that I only listen to christian, classical or country music but the truth is that i love to blast Lady Gaga in the car or when I am working out!
3. My FAVORITE place in the world to be, and where I feel most like myself, is Huntington Beach, CA! (thank goodness I am only 20 miles away!)
4. I am overly jumpy and I overreact to lots of things…especially my husbands driving. All my friends make fun of me for it….
5. I love staying in my dreams as long as possible at night. Sometimes (like this morning) I hate to wake up because I was involved in such an awesome story!
@gritandglory says:
Rah-rah-ah-ah-ah!
Rom-mah-rom-mum-mah!
GaGa-oo-la-la!
(i’m gonna be in orange, CA in a couple weeks — that’s close to you, right?!)
haha! that’s one of my favorite lines from her songs! :-)
YES! Orange is super close to me!!! I’m even staying there all next week housesitting for my parents-in-law. I also went to school at chapman for a couple years…
Alece, if I got the opportunity to meet you I would definitely be way more stoked than if I was meeting a celebrity… :-)
@gritandglory says:
i hope to have details soon on a get-together we’re gonna do in the Orange area — it would be great to finally meet you!
I have been enjoying Kirklands signature margarita (only $10! For a big thing) every night after con is in bed. So relaxing but only one glass so I don’t get a buzz.
We busted out our grill and dan and I are both learning to grill. Its very funny because dan goes by the directions and I actually know how food is supposed to look when its done. Plus I never like directions anyways unless I’m driving.
I have gained 40lbs in the past year going from a sickly size 0 to a full size 8. I just eat more when I am content with life. At least my boobs look good they are my go to when I don’tike the rest of my body.
In the past year I have started reading a lot more like 32 books more but sometimes I have to force myself to put the book down so I can get stuff done.
I love giving and getting gifts. Its my love language. Poor dan has had to learn this. I’m looking forward to mothers day for this reason alone. I’m not looking for anything big and expensive just thoughtful and sweet. Last year was a perfume he remembered I liked. This year could be more interesting if con helps out.
@gritandglory says:
32 books!?!? what have you been your favorites?
@larainec says:
1. i love salted/cured pork products
2. i can’t sit still.
3. I always have to go to the bathroom when im just about to fall asleep.
4. I always have to call someone on my way home from work to unwind.
5. I can only fall asleep with my fuzzy fleece blanket on a certain side, (i dont like how the other side feels on my feet), blankets it tucked underneath my feet and a pillow over my head.
Laraine, I have to call someone too. My commute is an hour, and so if I don’t get a hold of anyone, my tendency to get drowsy is HIGH.
@gritandglory says:
i totally thought of you when i was at Voodoo Doughnuts in portland… that dang maple bacon bar! (shudder!)
@larainec says:
i had a friend make a trip to voodoo and she brought me back one……it was soo good!
1. i love Love LOVE Reese’s peanut butter eggs…this is probably why i am on a diet right now.
2. i suffer from social awkwardness. i struggle with how to act in certain situations; meeting new people, having difficult conversations, etc. what makes this funny is part of my job is teaching classes on these subjects. but i do a great job teaching them and i’ve seen changes people because of those classes :)!
3. i really love my family and love spending time with them as much as i can.
4. i enjoy camping and especially the hot shower i take when i get home after 4 days of sponge baths.
5. i am a HUGE Little House on the Prairie and Anne of Green Gables fan!!!!!
I am a majorly HUGE Anne of Green Gables fan as well! In fact, my engagement ring is a pearl instead of a diamond because that is what Anne wanted when she got married! :-)
are you recently engaged? if so congratulations!!!
:-) I actually have been married a couple years… (i didn’t make that clear in my comment)
thanks tho!!! :-)
@gritandglory says:
i used to really love Little House and Anne… it’s been years since i’ve watched either…
Five things? Only five? ;)
1. I love Swedish Fish.
2. I will usually stop what I’m doing when Major League 3 comes on TV.

@gritandglory says:

1) I eat gummi bears when im anxious
2) I can not function mentally without my morning cup of coffee
3) I remember the strangest things, ie the mailing list order at my old job
4) I’m always determined to find a new and more interesting place to eat
5) When I get sucked into a book, I am compelled to finish it in one sitting.
So totally with you on #5, ever since I got hooked on reading in 2nd grade. I remember being a kid and my mom yelling at me to get in the shower (because I was wasting precious hot water) and not wanting to get in because it meant having to put the book down.
@gritandglory says:
i used to love to read a whole lot more than i do now. the enjoyment got lost somewhere in the past two years. i want to find it again.
This is such a great idea!
1. I am super duper girly, especially when it comes to funky jewlery. Love it!

1. i talk with my hands… which leads me to…
2. i believe interpretive dancing on a daily basis is an appropriate way to express yourself.
3. i love making myself cringe.
4. i love making others cringe.
5. i believe the “guffaw” is the best laugh known to man.
and now… you are cinco de MINE-O. so glad you’re here with me today. I’m thinking I’ll be keeping you forever.
JENNI! you said “guffaw”!!!! this is, by far, one of my favorite words and every time i use it people look at me with the “i have no idea what you’re talking about” face. makes me feel awkward. but yay! you use it. :)
(and interpretative dancing is TOTALLY an appropriate way to express yourself. daily. in public. preferably in target.)
@jclayville says:
i LOVE the word “guffaw”. the word itself makes me guffaw!
i also love target… and dancing in there. OBVIOUSLY!
@gritandglory says:
i wish i were counting your “guffaws” — you’ve said that so many times this week!
so glad you were cinco de mine-o as well! miss you, crasian.
oh yes! mexican food it is. very soon.
i’m just so happy we get to spend some time together soon.
=)
after that week i’m sure you’ll be able to list five random things about me. =)
@gritandglory says:
can’t wait to eat some mexican with you, my friend!
1. I eat in twos. Two grapes. Two M&Ms. Two pretzels. I cannot eat just one at a time.
2. I love to shop second-hand.
3. I hate to fly.
4. I haven’t worn high heels since my wedding day almost 15 years ago. I’d rather be barefoot or wear flip flops.
@gritandglory says:
i haaaaaate second-hand shopping. i never do it. i feel like i “should” because of… well, a lot of reasons. but i can’t bring myself to.
so… more for you? ;)
@kamriereed says:
1. I always want to be in the loop
2. I hate huges
3. I like talking to adults rather than people my own age.
4. I love dogs and can’t stand to have cats
5. I love The Office
@gritandglory says:
you hate hugs?
@kamriereed says:
What can I say there is something that is just akward when you hug a person. I can hug family members no problem, but when it comes to people I don’t really know that well than let’s just say I suddenly get really clausterphobic….
@coloraturajoy says:
okay, first, your list is beyond cute. and if friendships were based off of your #5 alone, you and i would practically be joined at the hip. truestory.
K. my turn, you say?
1. I say “um” WAY too much. I HATE it. Listeners hate it.But I haven’t figured out how to cure myself yet.
2. I only like margaritas that are made with sweetened lime juice. No fake neon stuff, kthx.
3. I can do, like, 3 chin-ups, and about 3/4ths of a pull-up. :)
4. I firmly believe that laughing is THE single best medicine for any ailment, physical or otherwise.
5. I probably drink about 70 or more ounces of water a day. My pee is like, ALWAYS, clear. ha….is that random enough for you?!
@gritandglory says:
i’m also a frequent ummer.
and, um, i don’t know the difference between a chin-up and a pull-up. but i probably can’t do either anyway.
ooh fun… i love talking about myself! jk
1. really really enjoy a McDonald’s cheeseburger and sweet tea!
2. i go love to read in french, but only out loud… because it’s much cooler that way.
3. i have really really really been enjoying my Justin Bieber cd. no seriously, i have!
4. i have only dated mexican men (threw that one in, in honor of the holiday)… i’d like to change that, fyi;)
5. the only other career i’d choose is to be a lounge singer;)
@gritandglory says:
justin bieber? really?! think you’ll still like him after his voice drops? (hee hee… couldn’t resist.)

4. i laugh out LOUD. really loud and sometimes obnoxious.
5. when i talk my hands flail all over the place. sometimes i hit my face because of that.
@gritandglory says:
i’m a hand-flailer as well.
it took me 3 attempts to type “hand-flailer”. it kept coming out “fail-handler”.
@PrudyChick says:
All I have is this image you you dancing during a prayer.
1. There is this tune I randomly hum. No words. My brain made it up. Been humming it for years.
2. I don’t drink any of my coffee until I get to work. Forces me to drink water.
3. I read comic strips every day.
4. I love a good margarita and mojito and glass of wine, but hate paying what they cost in restaurants so I don’t usually get one.
5. I have to have my toes painted at all times. Even in winter when they are covered with socks. After my surgery a few days afterward I painted my toes cause I couldn’t stand it.
Girl. You need to visit Austin so my husband can make you a mojito. Uh-mazing. Mojitos are my weakness and well…Russ makes some GOOD ones.
@gritandglory says:
i’ve been trying to get in the habit of not eating/drinking anything until i’ve drank a full glass of water in the morning. i was doing so good at it for weeks (maybe even months)… until i started this traveling trip. UGH. gotta figure out a way to still make that happen.
First of all let me tell you that I seriously miss TexMex, being from Houston. And I won’t even try to describe what passes for Mexican here in VA! When we lived in Houston last, we used to go to a restaurant called Cinco de Mayo, but the spaces in the parking lot were labeled “Cimco de Mayo”!
So here’s my list –
I only like dark chocolate. Milk chocolate is yucky and even though I can pass up any dessert if it isn’t chocolate, I will pass on chocolate if it isn’t dark!
I sort my M&Ms (dark, or course) by color and eat them in order from most to least.
I will share any food or beverage (except coffee!), except for the last bite or sip. If don’t finish whatever it is, I feel like I haven’t finished!
No matter what time I get up in the morning, my brain doesn’t wake up before 10am.
There has been someone involved in ministry in my family in every generation dating back to the first Hugenot pastor in the US. And it will continue at least one more generation with my daughter who intends to be a nurse missionary.
@gritandglory says:
would you believe me if i told you i don’t like chocolate? truestory.
1. I love cheesecake. I’m talkin’ LOVE IT.
2. I’ve eaten 2 frosted strawberry pop-tarts almost every morning for the good part of the last twenty or so years. (creature of habit, much?)
3. My wife is seriously the coolest person I know.
4. I may be recording an EP in Nashville this year.
5. I’m immature when it comes to humor…jokes concerning poop always get me. :)
Totally with you on the cheesecake. Yum! That makes me hungry for a piece now. In the hospital, when I had my last daughter, I ate a piece with every meal!
@gritandglory says:
2 frosted poptarts every day for 20 years can’t be good for you!!!
congrats on the EP recording — that is incredible! can’t wait to hear your stuff.
oh, and i’m the same way about jokes. i laugh like a middle schooler at inappropriate humor…
1. I have two least favorite words at the moment. I flailed out of my chair in small group because of the intentional use of one of the. The words: Moist and Frothy.
2. I start to gag when i see or hear toothpaste exit/get spread around the corners of one’s mouth.
3. I hate toppings. Salad dressing, ketchup, cheese, salsa, mayo, mustard, pepper, salt, etc. No me gusta. (sorry, mexico)
4. I’m terr-ib-le at talking on the phone. I’m a certified phone convo weetard. And I hate doing it. It always seems so awk and impersonal to me when I can’t see a person’s eyes or give them a hug.
5. I only sleep with one pillow. It hurts my neck and back to sleep with any more than that.
:)
@gritandglory says:
“cinco de coopo” made me laugh! love it!
i love saying “frothy” — i always say i’m getting a “hot frothy beverage” at St. Bux. (are you squirming yet?) don’t worry – i’m totally with you on the “M” word though. (shudder!)
no toppings sounds so…bland. i’m a toppings-girl. i love dipping…
@bajanpoet says:
Something else random about me … I’m not allowed to sleep with the window open (threat of the neighbourhood) so I sleep with a fan on most nights.
I LOVE web comic strips … I have several I’m addicted to.
I sleep in the fetal position with a pillow between my legs if I’m in the bed alone.
I HATE coffee. Only drink chocolate (when I do drink something hot!)
ummm gonna see if I can think of any others ….

holy cow I haven’t looked at LFG in so long.
@bajanpoet says:
You’re welcome for my re-introducing you to it. I hope u like some of the others I posted as well :) What about YOU? What do YOU like to read?
@PrudyChick says:
Oh just normal ones like Garfield. Haha
@bajanpoet says:
*grin* Well – welcome to an expanded horizon! LOL
With you on the coffee … ugh!
The San Antonian in me loves reading what all you other Texans have written!
1. I’ve lived 18 places in my 45 years. The one place I’ve felt like I “fit” was Toronto back in the late 80′s.
2. There’s just something about Elmo that makes my heart squeal with delight. And lambs.
3. I tended to be a lazy student who did the best when truly challenged by a teacher. One of the things I’m most proud of is getting an A in college from the most notoriously hard teacher on campus who NEVER gave A’s. My friend who went on to Harvard is still mystified and jealous. heh heh
4. I keep a “favorite quotes” journal, and write down whatever speaks to me. A recent one is by Christine Caine: “Remember…. in life, you will never get THERE if you don’t start HERE…. the future is in the present moment, what are you doing with it?”
5. I love Cheetos and Bugles, but only eat them on special occasions.
I agree! :) I live in San Antone right now. :) Texas is a pretty darn good place to be! Even though the weather got to 96 degrees today. I thought I was going. TO. DIE. :) I just moved from the Panhandle. Oh Lordy…. dark skin here I COME!
San Antone! There’s the name. The last time I was there, it was summer and the heat was so intense, I could feel the moisture in my eyes drying up. I felt like a big tumbleweed!!
@gritandglory says:
i looooove elmo too! he’s always been my favorite.
i ate a bugle for the first time a few months ago.
Really enjoyed getting to know a few things about you in this post… I can relate to the bladder thing. LOL
1) I love watching “Animaniacs”. Especially “Pinky and The Brain”.
2) I don’t like using the plain post-it-notes and only use shaped (flower, arrow, apples, star, etc) post-it-notes.I have them all over my house.
3) I have discovered that I like to paint and that I’m not too bad at it.
4) I also discovered recently that Mod Podge rocks my face off. I love creating stuff with it and the stuff actually comes out pretty good.
5) Edy’s Fun Flavors Mint Chocolate Chip with Brownie pieces is the ice cream that makes me uber happy.
@gritandglory says:
i am so not creative, so my eyes got wide over paint and mod podge. and i gotta be honest. i don’t even know what mod podge is.
AND i can’t do shaped post-its. i’m a plain jain square girl.
@bajanpoet says:
LOVE Pinky and the Brain and the Animaniacs!!!!
Okay, so…
1 – Met my husband on-line and when I was meeting him in person for the first time, my Mom told me not to laugh – I have a very loud, boisterous laugh – but so does he!
2 – I only drink when I play poker and then it is a Whiskey Sour or Lynchburg Lemonade
3 – This only naturally follows 2, I am incapable of getting drunk. I am an enzyme short, no joke
4 – I could drink an entire pot of coffee and go right to sleep – Thank you Granny for putting it in my bottles as a Child
5 – If I could, I would sit and read all day, every day while drinking sweet tea
@gritandglory says:
wait… what?! an enzyme short so you are incapable of getting drunk?! i don’t get that, but… wow. it’s surprising you don’t drink more then!
When I figured it out, I thought it was a little weird but evidently it is hereditary – got it from my Dad – but no, I cant stand the stuff. Not even Wine.
Hola Alece.
I cut my sandwich into equal bit size bits before I eat it.
I have created a playlist on my iPod, and I imagine my self sinning the playlist in a concert, as I listen to hit. I sometimes dance my performance in my condo. Hopefully I have remembered to close my drapes. I play a mean air guitar.
Every morning I plan to go to bed before midnight. Every night I find something interesting on TV, the Internet, a book, etc, and haven’t been to bed before 5 am in weeks. This means that often when I wake up in the morning, it isn’t morning anymore.
I am the only atheist I know who post a Bible study on his blog.
This is the first time this month I have thought of the word platypus.
@gritandglory says:
i smiled big at your “hola”!
i often stay up until 4 or 5 as well — i like to say i was made to live on hawaiian time no matter what timezone i’m in!
you are definitely the only atheist i know who posts a bible study on his blog. i love you for that!
when i was a kid, i used to make this weird face as an impersonation of a duck-billed platypus.
@aeg0707 says:
Harder than I thought!!!! Here goes nothing…
1- I love to run but I’m horrible at it, so a “win” for me is a 13 min mile
2- Jokes from 5 yr olds make me laugh every single time. My Snow White joke (from my favorite 4 yr old) kills it in any crowd.
3- In my real life, I’m a political speechwriter…who can’t spell. At all. 3 dictionaries on or near my person at all times.
4- I’m currently in pursuit of the Ashley Elizabeth style. I’m thinking it’s somewhere between Audrey Hepburn, Madonna ala 1984, and whatever goes with massive, funky jewelry.
5-I do, just like my mother said I would, regret quitting piano lessons.
@gritandglory says:
i’m so intrigued by the fact that you’re a political speechwriter. i love the old tv series “west wing”, and my mind immediately pictured rob lowe as sam seaborn…
i regret quitting piano lessons, too. but i more wish i could play guitar than piano…
1. i chew gum every night after dinner. i subconsciously think it will keep me from snacking.
2. i always do the dishes before bed. i don’t like dirty dishes in the sink in the morning.
3. i truly think i will go bald before my husband. i will absolutely be that old woman with thinning hair as he has thick gorgeous black hair. so not fair.
4. i feel sad that i didn’t get to come to the Portland tweetup last night. i had prior commitments.
5. but i feel really sad that i might not get a chance to meet you for a long time now.
but we can still be friends right? good night sweet alece.
@gritandglory says:
of course we can still be friends!!!! i’m sorry we didn’t have the chance to get together while i was in town. i’m down in medford until the 17th in case you happen to come down this way at all. (long shot, i know…)
does the gum-chewing really keep you from snacking?
1. I am a very organized person and when my “life” is unorganized, it makes me nuts … uhm, like now!
2. I journal everything … seriously everything … my prayers, my God moments, what God said, what God did or is doing, everything. It’s good and it is even better when I go back and read and see God’s hand moving so amazingly in my life.
3. I LOVE cranberry sauce and eat it when I feel like something sweet in hopes of avoiding more detrimental calories.
4. Nothing better to me than snuggling with my girls and hubby.
5. One of my favorite indulges is eating crispy hot french fries dipped in thick chocolate milkshake. It’s sooo good! Okay, so this is one of the only foods I don’t mind mixing.
And, I’m with you on the Mexican food and beverages … yum! Praying one day you’ll make it to Texas for some “real” Mexican food and for a hug for me. Missing you friend! Love you!
@gritandglory says:
i love “fake” cranberry sauce — but not the kind with the whole berries. blech.
sorry things are so crazy for you right now! praying for you, sweet debra.
I blogged mine. Thx for the idea. Sorry to be a copy-cat. I’m lacking my own inspiration lately.
http://allmymonkeys.blogspot.com/2010/05/cinco.html
I’ll list a few more here…
**I’m with you on the Mexican. mm mm mm. AND the no-salt.
**I always hated libraries, til I decided bringing cocktails in (margaritas usually, and an occasional 40oz – yes in a paper bag, lol) made them much more tolerable (college – sophmore yr), and later found one that doesn’t charge late fees. That’s right! No LATE FEES. Woot woot.
**When worship music is playing at church, I have to rock back and forth. I can’t control it. And when I’m on prayer team, I sometimes get lost in the song and forget to pray. (oops. grimace.)
**oh, and I have 2 good friends with bdays on 5/5. One is part Mexican.
@gritandglory says:
i do the same thing with getting lost in a song and forgetting to pray. used to feel guilty about it. now i just figure my heart needs to sing a prayer more than she needs to pray one.
the mental picture of you sipping on a brown-bag margarita in the library is AWESOME.
1. I was incredibly disappointed many years ago when I was getting my drivers license because they would not allow me to have a handicap sticker thing for being under 4’11. I am 4 10 and 1/2, and I looked forward to that many years and my dreams were a little crushed.
2. I also hold my bladder as long as I can because I’m super lazy. Which is funny, because I’ve been watching a movie and have had to go for quite some time, and I’m still holding it.
3. When I walk by a fan or something, and the air hits the right side (or left side) of my body, I have to walk back, in order to hit the left side, (Can you say an OCD pattern???) I do that with any type of feeling that I get from one side. I feel like it will help me get balanced! ha!
4. I feel like a child sometimes, because I have a very specific blanket that I sleep with, and have a hard time sleeping if it’s not there. I have to wrap my blanket around my feet and curl up in order to fall asleep. As well as have my panda bear’s (I have ha since 3rd grade) plastic nose against my lips. Urrrg for the day I get married :)
5. I only like feet that are smaller than mine. (I 22 and wear a 6 in kids). :) So only kid feet. They are too cute because they are so little! :)
I’ve got a teddy bear I sleep. I’m with ya about the wedding night.
I have a blanket I have to sleep with that has “silkie” around the edges. My parents tried to take it from me when I got into high school and I pitched a royal fit so they gave it back.
But no worries about the wedding night. My husband was perfectly fine with it as he should be! He just gets mad if it touches him…
@gritandglory says:
what’s the deal with the handicap sticker? they are supposed to let you have one if you’re under 4’11″?? i think it’s hilarious that you were disappointed you couldn’t have one!
Girl! If you’re under 4’11 you’re considered a “legal midget” lol! :) hahahah. So by law, I can get a handicap sticker and I asked them about it, and they were like.. “no.” haha. I was very disappointed. Oh well! :)
1) I am a complete snob about coffee. No black drip, or with sugar or room. But a dry, double shot cappuccino. Please.
2) I enjoy being on the water. Sailing, rowing, running or just sitting near it. Just being around it calms me. But not in it. I hate being in it. My life became so much easier when I decided to shower at night.
3) I like to sleep with the blankets pulled up to my chin, with my bare toes sticking out.
4) I have a fear of treadmills and Ferris wheels. Both stem from incidents in my childhood.
5) I was recently gifted a sewing machine AND a serger. And although I have the desire to learn, they both sit in the corner of my room, because I have no freakin’ idea where to start. I did recently learn how to knit though and am very proud of myself. Though the only thing I’ve made so far is a nose warmer.
@gritandglory says:
what’s the “dry” mean in your cappuccino order???
i’m also afraid of treadmills. i’ve seen too many funny/frightening youtube videos to ever step foot on one!
In a perfect world a dry cappuccino is 1/3 espresso, 1/3 milk, 1/3 foam. A lot of the big chains, ah hum. Starbucks their drinks are milk heavy so it ends up being about 1/4 espresso 1/2 milk, 1/4 foam. I don’t like the water down taste of the coffee with all the milk in it so I order it dry. My go to drink is a double tall dry cappuccino and ordering it this way makes me happy at most places.
When I was 8 my dad decided he wanted to buy a treadmill for the house. We were visiting Sears on customer appreciation day. A sales clerk with showing my dad all the models and like kids do I was playing around. I was trying to make one with no power go, needless to say it wasn’t working too well. I told my dad I was going to hop onto the one they had plugged in and going really slow. I hopped over just as a salesman helping another couple decided to show them just how fast it would go. As soon as my foot touched the tread it through me back into the treadmill behind it. I had to go to the hospital and had a concussion. Yeah, treadmills not my cup of tea.
@gritandglory says:
a treadmill concussion?! oh my dang! my fears are valid!!!!
@mjdagenhart says:
1. I’m really good at remembering dates–significant and insignificant. I think numerically more than I like to admit.
2. I tend to push the limits when my gas light comes on. For some reason, I kind of enjoy the anxiety of not knowing whether or not I’ll make it. I’ve always wondered how much time I would have to pull over, but fear of the wrath of my parents has always outweighed curiosity. After my mom ran out of gas three weeks ago, I let myself do the same last week…she couldn’t give me hell that way. :)
3. I really really really hate the heat. My body even reacts negatively to it. Sometimes I find it hard to believe I was raised in SoCal…and near the desert, especially.
4. I collect hotel keys. I have one from every hotel I’ve stayed in since 2003, plus a few that I had saved before.
5. I eat sandwiches in circles.
@gritandglory says:
oh my dang, i love your list, ‘risa!
you let yourself run out of gas intentionally, to see how much time you have after the light comes on?! how long was it??
i love picturing you eating your sandwiches in circles. (i’ve always struggled to spell the word sandwich by the way. i remember getting it wrong on a spelling test at some point in my school career, and i think of that every time i write it.)
ha, I always and still say samwich. And I think it’s funny cause I have a little brother named sam. :) Weird.
@mjdagenhart says:
Haha yep…I made it about 45 miles then found out I have about 20 seconds to pull over, which was plenty of warning. I stayed away from freeways when I knew it was getting close so I wouldn’t be stuck there, so I was a little safety-conscientious in my craziness. Maybe I’ll be better about filling up immediately now that I’m no longer curious…maybe.
I love knowing that about you. Love you, ‘lece!
i totally have a “#3″ kid!! :)
@gritandglory says:
i wonder if i did it as a kid, too. i can’t remember…
1. I live and die by my planner and my close friends and family make fun of me for it.
2. I’m addicted to reality television and my close friends and family make fun of me for it. (They really are nice people.)
3. If I make my bed in the morning my day will be more productive.
4. I’m lucky enough to have three best (and I mean BEST) friends who are all unique and beautiful.
5. I could live on chocolate chip cookie dough…but I probably wouldn’t live long.
@gritandglory says:
do you use a written planner or an electronic one?
i loooooove eating chocolate chip cookie dough, but don’t really like the actual cookies.
A written one. And I always use a pencil because I’m constantly erasing and rewriting things.
@Nomadstacey says:
I’ll try to make them 5 things NOT on my 50 random facts about me list…
1. I’m in NBA (nail biters anonymous) right now. I’m really trying hard to stop, but it’s SUPER difficult!
2. I don’t really wear patterns very much. Most of my outfits are solid colors. And yes, I’m trying to expand my wardrobe.
3. I don’t like wearing socks. Ever. But especially to bed.
4. I don’t really tan. I mean, I’ll get a little color (or burn) but very quickly my skin goes right back to being Casper-esque. My winter color is my year-round color.
5. I used to have 6 piercings…all in my ears. Now, I only have 4.
@gritandglory says:
i’m definitely a solid-colors girl. if i find a shirt i like (most of which are of the glorified t-shirt variety…) i will usually buy it in a few different colors. so most of my wardrobe is the same. i have to force myself to branch out in colors, too, or it’ll all be grey, black, white, and blue.
did you let your 2 other piercings close intentionally?
6 piercings in your ears?! ouch! :) I have had my nose pierced, a tattoo, (getting a second one) and my lip pierced, but for some weird reason, I’m TERRIFIED to get my ears pierced! And I’m 22, sad day. Every time someone tries to take me, I freak out. haha!
@tamhodge says:
i can pop my hip out of joint.
ive only grown an inch since the fifth grade.
my first kiss was in the 4th grade. he was in the sixth. his breath smelled like sour milk.
i have to pee.
i like you.
@gritandglory says:
bear down!
@randishort says:
Oh… I like randomness! :o)
- Had my first Starbucks drink in spring of 2009. Been hooked since, and spending my days trying to make up for the years that I had never known about it.
- I’ve been to 8 of the 10 provinces in Canada. But never outside of it… yet.
- One of my biggest pet peeves? Two finger typers.
- I called my grad date by the wrong name. Oops!
- Huge introvert. The first time I was involved in worship at my church I…. got sick afterwards. It’s improved a little. But I still get the jitters and crash afterwards.
@gritandglory says:
i’m already cringing for the day i head back to africa and leave my beloved starbucks behind…
@randishort says:
All will be well. :) I’m sure Africa would make up for starbucks.
Though if need be – I’ll send you some when you head over there. Shipments two days apart so you never have to go without. ;)
Come see me and you’ll get your fill of Mexican food.
And we can brush our teeth together because I’m messy, too.
@gritandglory says:
i can’t wait to eat mexican food with you…
#3: did that just today. For the same reasons. :)
Yeah, I can’t think of interesting things about myself, except that I’ve got a significant buzz right now from some yummy wine. :) The words are flowin’ a bit more loosely than usually. :) hope your night is good.
