for crying out loud
September 18, 2008
Christians have the biggest buts.
I would like to get involved, but…
I wish I could do more, but…
I’d love to, but…
I know God wants me to, but…
Get off your but and do something already.

@cassgirl says:
Get off my BUT!!!
I have some but’s in my life that God is so working on in my life right this very minute before I go to bed. Somedays they are difficult if you know what I mean??
Thank you again for kicking me again in the but’s
@ventigrace says:
amen sister, amen
I have a big but. BUT being realistic is important? Do you think it’s possible to be living in God’s ‘yes- BUT not yet? Sheesh I have one huge ass.
Hey Alece, I have been wanting to post on your blog for a while and this post is great. Just wanted to tell you that… I like it! A LOT! and it gives Sir Mix A Lot something to think about, right? :)
Oops I mean Sir Mixalot, correction of that rap name!
@atangie says:
What a great side bar button!
yeah – the but doe get in the way. I am sharing a bit about this point on Sunday AM in church. I rewrote a line in a popular song (in Spanish and English). Goes a little something like this:
“I’m trading my excuses. I’m trading my pretexts. I’m laying them down, for I can with my God.”
it’s gonna be fun. :-)
heidi — email me about your buts.
ripple — you made me ponder and laugh all at the same time. my ASSet is pretty big, too, don’t worry. i do think God has a “not yet” season for us sometimes, and i think that differs from a “but” WE are using as an excuse. unless the “not yet” is coming from us, and then that’s just the christian way of saying “but”…
TJ Maxx — i’m glad you decided to join in on the craziness at the Grit! oh, and, uhhh… living in africa = i have no clue who sir mixalot is!
@ — thanks for noticing my mission trip button! sounds like sunday’s gonna be rockin’!
http://traciejane.wordpress.com
I already have a nickname from you? Special :)
Sir Mixalot sings the famous old school rap song “I Like Big Butts”… ha ha? To me it was funny!
Ps. In no way am I proud of that song or that I still know the words :(
Sir Mixalot needs these words in your post
Just sayin’…
yeah, you’ll quickly discover that i’m all about the nicknames!
ah! that song title sounds familiar now… i love that this post connected your brain to that!
thanks for the link; heading over to check you out…now!
i like my butt.
i like your butt, too.
(where’d you face go, though? i miss seeing your smile here.)
@danielleH says:
good.
YEAH!!!!!
i thought you might like this, mark!
(and i really like your new avatar picture!)
lol Nice.
@moweezle says:
TOTALLY AGREE!!!!!
You are right alece, very often it’s our own buts getting in the way not God. I’ll need to take a good look at my but! Thanks for that:)
it’s hard to look at our own buts, isn’t it?!
Amen sister! And, rather than getting aggrevated at others ‘buts,’ I am going to be kicking my own out. And, boy if Jesus isn’t speaking to me through you. I am getting off my but!
Thanks!
hi debra! you made me smile.
oy.
this baby got BACK. More than I’d like to admit. *sigh*
Tracy and I think alike. I ♥ Sir Mix a Lot. LOL!
“this baby got BACK”? translation please?
TracIE (I got it wrong before)….you know all the words??? I think I have met a new best friend.
Alece, I think you need to know that song. It is HILARIOUS.
“I like big butts and I cannot lie
you other brothers can’t deny
when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
and a round thing in your face….”
I won’t continue. It’s not blogable. LOL!!!
Oh dear……
ha ha — oh yeah, i’ve heard that first line before!
Baby Got Back is the song by Sir Mix A Lot which basically translates to Baby got a big butt. hahaha!!!
Baby=me
Back=my big butt, or but
oh really?! that’s the name of the song?! that’s hilarious.

@cassgirl says:
I still had my tea with God on my porch though.
How are you chicky??

@cassgirl says:
oh BTW… I love you button for the blog missions trip… so impressive.
thanks! i stayed up WAY TOO LATE last night trying to make that.
@cassgirl says:
Love you too
Oh my gosh, I love it! And my “‘but” is getting the heck out of my language.
Thanks Alece.
Well, Alece. My desires and my abilities don’t match up. It’s hard sometimes to realize He didn’t call me to go to _______ as I had hoped. At one point, long before illness hit, I was going to adopt LOTS of children. You know, be one of those families with 10 or more children…wanted to be a foster mom…just wanted to DO.
The reality sucks. So…I say thanks because it is a much needed word. Then I remember my reality and feel my inadequacies. He must have called me to do SOMETHING…maybe I just don’t want to do what He’s called me to…
The only assurance I have in this…Paul wrote some amazing words from prison.
Love you, Alece.
Oh my goodnes! I am so sorry I missed the “Baby got Back” discussion. I would have loved to get in on that!
April we can start it again if you want :)
Have you seen on the show Friends where Ross and Rachel sing that song to their baby? LOL!
Shane Claiborne said, “Pray with your feet.” Walk your prayers out. For us Christians to do rather than just talk about it.
Also I would as God why there is so much pain and suffering in the world, but I am afraid he would ask me the same thing.
Tracie, wouldn’t anyone laugh when hearing that song? Even a baby! LOL!!
@cassgirl says:
I even LAUGHED… I am OLD!!!
It was hilarious… I literally was eating breakfast and choked on it!!
You…!!! :)
@cassgirl says:
My photo is coming don’t laugh!!
@cassgirl says:
ooh that’s better….
brandy-heehee, look what we started?
heidi-your life will never be the same will it?
@cassgirl says:
nope!!
just to chime in a little late…I am old enough to know Baby Got Back to…and we used to sing it all the time! so funny….
My first comment ever on your blog…I am feeling worldly now. :)
When I started losing weight…I lost my butt. I ain’t got no butt to get off. ;)
I added the happy faces just for you cause I know you disabled them. :) :) :)
Happy Face :)
Happy Face :)
Happy Face :)
heehee
love you!
Fear… that’s the biggest stumbling block. It’s what’s stopping us. As long as we are chained to our fears, we will never get anything done. We will remain to be birds on a cage, unable to soar.
PS: Alece, saw the post in Mandy’s about your ministry in Africa. God bless you.
~Sherma
I’ve got one for you.
I would normally say yes – BUT GOD TOLD ME NOT TO!
Sometimes we take on stuff we have no business involving ourselves with.
Obedience = What He asks of me. No more. No less.
@cassgirl says:
I love you too!!!
hehe!!
@cassgirl says:
oh crud.. (can I say crud on your blog) I for got to sign in.
Shoot! You started the conversation back up after I went back to work! I haven’t seen that Friends episode and I thought I had seen them all! Too funny!
lwBUT – king of the but’s ;-)
well said here Leesh…
but…
saying is SO much easier than Doing – sigh.
it’s knowing where and how – even WHAT to start…?
i like what Soliliquy said about Obedience and taking on ‘stuff’ (that we may not be best ‘qualifeid’ for).. but…
As Brainy said above… we should not let fear prevent us from taking the first step then seeing where He leads our steps from there.
too many buts!
<B
APRIL!!!!!!!!!!! And others if have not seen! LOL!
Here you go:

hislife — “the heck out of my language” – amen sister!
michelle — i think your “but” has led you to find other ways to DO. you are DOing a lot: you’ve enriched my life tremendously! praying for you…
JC — “pray with your feet” is such a good thought; thanks for your input!
theresa — i am honored (and smiling!) that you commented! i think i may have even squealed!
brainteaser/sherma — yes! fear keeps us from doing so many things. (we spent time talking about that in my missions class this week!)
soliloquy — absolutely, obedience trumps all. i think that is largely different than a normal “but” that is usually followed by some lame excuse.
LWBUT — amen!
tjmaxx — that friends clip is hilarious! thank you thank you for the comic relief this morning!
@atangie says:
Oh my! Tears are dripping out of my eyes at that friends clip!
“for crying out loud” is right, eh?! ha ha!
@atangie says:
HA! That is soooooo right! :-) ha ha ha
Between that and the oreo video I about had to make a run to the bathroom! funny!
Alece, hehe!
Angie- if I knew how to make the bug eye emoticon it would be here. LOL!
@atangie says:
tj, hilarious!
laughter is good medicine…
@atangie says:
there are some hilarious rap videos on youtube – DaRonn likes to pull them up and culture our kids. He tries to show them only the fun (non R) ones. :-)
@atangie says:
He loves Jesus, but he listens to rap a little.
niiiiice…
@atangie says:
(thought you might like that one Alece…)
ha ha ha! that cracked me up!
@atangie says:
what a great way to start the day. :-)
Off to work I go, lol Alece and Angie!
@atangie says:
have a good day tj. (that rhymes! cool!)
@cassgirl says:
Nothing like squeezing on little ones. Nothing..
I pray that Hope house will be on our list of things to do when we get to Africa?
Amen.
absolutely, heidi! :-)
Alece,
Loved reading your blog tonight. Came by way of Mandy Thompson’s doer Blogfest… and so appreciate it.
You know my favorite “but” is “I’ve been trying to get involved, but nothing seems to be working out.”
That is exactly where I found myself last summer – we had just moved to a new church and I signed up to volunteer in the church office with the women’s ministry which worked out to be a couple of times and then I signed up to be a group leader for a small group that was kicking off where everyone in the church (some 12,000-15,000 members were being encouraged to get involved) and somehow my group got left off the site by the start date and then when it finally was up I only got one phone call… “The day you are meeting is not good for me, but…”
So I sat down and asked God what He wanted me to do. “Write the vision and make it plain…. Thought it lingers wait for it, the vision will come at the appointed time.” Habakkuk 2 paraphrase…
So I started bloggin’ and joined a readers and writers group on Tuesdays through my church. Now, I have more to do than I can shake a stick at. Three blogs, a book that still needs a review, a small group with four members at church, I mentor my daughter and two friends on Monday nights by teaching them systematic theology and I also was a team leader in preparing this years conference for women at church where Christine Caine and her A21 campaign were showcased. Powerful Stuff… and I’m lovin’ every minute of it by the way.
Sometimes our Christian buts are related to the type or size of the assignment as much as it is the timing, the opportunity or the inconvenience of the task. Don’t despise small assignments, or those who talk about them in so many words… Blessings to you – in Africa! Totally cool post -thanks for making me think.
michelle — THAT was awesome. thank you for sharing all that. i love hearing stories of God working like that!
