cliff notes

Cliff notes of my week:

I spent time in DC with my sweet friend Tracee. The morning after I arrived, I ended up in a pediatric (don’t ask) dentist’s office on an emergency visit . What I thought was possibly a filling that fell out was actually half my tooth. Yikes.

We ate at one of my favorite restaurants from back home in South Africa—in downtown DC. (Holla if you’ve ever eaten at Nando’s on either side of the ocean!) I was disappointed they didn’t have Castle Lager, but the peri-peri chicken made my nose run and my heart happy.

I volunteered at Catalyst One Day in Baltimore, and got to sit in on pretty much the entire event. God’s good like that. (I love me some leadership development!)

I wasn’t sure what to expect from my Meet Me at Starbucks shout-out, and was blown away that 17 people showed up. It was interesting to see corners of my world collide as ministry supporters, old friends, and bloggers intersected in one spot.

Meet Me at Starbucks collage

It felt a little blind-date-esque to finally meet Tonggu Momma, The Gypsy Mama, Stranger, and my lurking “I’ll never comment” reader from Oklahoma. (Hi Karen!)

I didn’t realize the implications when I announced on twitter and Facebook thatmy ‘blind date’ at Starbucks was so great!” One friend told me with a raised eyebrow that he wanted to hear my crazy blind date story.  Another called his wife to see if she knew anything about this date I went on. Oops.

At the last minute, I booked a ticket to Detroit. Since I arrived two nights ago, I’ve shot a promo video, met with some pastors, spent time with a friend who works at Thrive, and hung out with my Yeller. Good times in Michigan. I’m ready to get home to the HTL though.

What are some cliff notes from your week?

What a cute collection of pictures! My husband was out of town for work all week, so my week consisted of staying up too late, eating ice cream and not making the bed. And whining that I had to feed the dogs 2x a day. (Since that is normally his job!)

I love Nando’s!! I ate there in London a couple of years ago and wish there was one here in Texas, for sure! Cliff notes for my week are pretty boring…work, cleaning, Bible study, and book club. :)

  10. Shea says:

Love, love, LOVE the recap! Sounds like such a fun few days. Love you! Miss you.

  11. Katie says:

My cliff notes are nothing but Wows, and Oh-my-goodness-how-did-I-never-see-this,-Lord? I can barely keep up, taking notes in my journal of everything. It’s been exciting, humbling, and everything in the middle.

I think you know that I eat at Nandos….uh, regularly …hoping to hit the one in DC though. I was excited to see Becca’s parents in that picture…I need to email Sue…I totally forgot they were in VA now.

My week- staff meeting, office time using lots of excel spreadsheets, spent some quality time in a hardware store educating myself on different types of locks, meetings, day in Qwa Qwa- see my blog for more details, drove interns to various events, and today drove around in the rain in Joburg all day….pu kb early morning tomorrow…and back to the ranch.

In there, I managed to watch Season 5 finalle of “So you think you can dance” and sleep:).

Oh- and I love Cliff Notes…they are the only way I graduated from highschool!

  13. Earl says:

So a guy I work with asked me the same question last night (“so what’s news with you?”) and I was like, “uhhhhhh…..” because

… this week has been really intense. But in an emotional/spiritual way that he would probably never understand, and which would take forever to explain, and besides I’m crazy introverted.

One of my good friends from my internship mission trip (Venezuela ’97) came up to MN to visit last week. She’s never been up here before and I put her up at Stephanie’s house (you remember Stephanie Wiechmann, right?) whom she’d never met before. Stephanie and her husband are majorly anointed to minister to hurting people, and she is one. (jarring grammatical error intended.) Their house is like a spiritual hospital ward. It’s the most incredible thing. People open up deep emotional wounds to them like I’ve never seen. And … that’s exactly what happened. Physical abuse, sexual abuse, trauma, verbal abuse, addiction, spiritual abuse, and codependency all flopped out on the table, and she spent some intense days visiting emotions she had shut off and drowned out for 30 years. We all were ministered to; learned a LOT in the process, and and had some great times too, but man … it was INTENSE.

So yeah. That was my week.

  17. I desperately tried to read 300 pages and write a paper about it in one night (without coffee!)…I only fell 40 pages short. Slept for 4 hours and finished the paper with 20 minutes to spare :)

After that day was finally over, I slept for 14 hours. And still woke up tired.

When I wasn’t sleeping or in class, my best friends graciously tried to keep me distracted from my other major stress of the week.

I was going to stay at school this weekend, but instead decided to come home a night earlier than normal…I needed my mama.

And now I finally get to relax :)

    my week…
work related: writing documentation for policies and training my replacements
home related: cooking dinner, laundry, snuggling with my little pumpkin, “cooking” with the little pumpkin, more laundry, bathing the little pumpkin, even more laundry (how do three people create some much laundry?!)m attending a wedding tonight with hubby and little pumpkin, and finally, SUPER happy hubby has the whole weekend off so we can spend some much needed time together.
church related: lesson planning, Christmas program planning, teaching classes

btw, i love the excitement in your words when you talk about thrive!! awesome!!

mmm, nando’s is tasty especially with Mediterranean peri peri.
as for cliff notes….playing with Lindo, binding and more binding-woot!, learning basotho games, last town time aka buying gifts including play swords!, having my heart break saying “see you in His timing” to the hope house kiddos, and curling up on the couch because it’s so cold!

  20. coop says:

when i think of stranger, I think of Albert Camus’ existentialist (disturbing) novel “The Stranger.”

and we use spark notes nowadays. just so you know. i’m not a huge fan of cliffs. :)

my SparkNotes: twas absolutely ridiculous in every aspect. i was way way way too busy. and i lost sleep and (gave) blood (and therefore, heat as well) in the process. but i was blessed too. like when I meet a (non-existentialist) stranger. that was pretty dang sweeeet. :)

    • yikes. i’ve never read that novel but if our two-way nickname brings that to mind, it’s maybe time to retire it…

seriously? “sparknotes”? i’ve never even heard of that! thanks for getting this old lady up to speed!

i can’t give blood because of all the time i’ve spent in africa. but you know, i’m okay with that. because i’m NOT okay with needles.

i’m so glad i got to hug you, coop.

  21. Loved the week with you friend. there was a ton packed all up in there! very fun though. I am grateful to have been a part all that fun stuff with you. thank you.

Hope you can get some down time soon!

Nandos is only a couple of blocks away! The week has been over-run by an epidemic of…man-sick. Really does make me glad to be a girl!

In case you’ve never seen this phenomenon that is Man-Sick:

  24. LOVED getting some time with you on Thursday evening. Thank you for joining us, I know how busy your schedule is right now!

  25. I was in Durban and PMB for a month.

I didn’t discover Nando’s until a week into my trip.

I made up for it by having twice a day for the rest of my time there.

    I sure do miss Nando’s :(
