how do you say “risk” in spanish?

I knew choosing risk as my one-word for the year would be risky. And I seem to have jumped right in with both feet.

I’m sure a free vacation doesn’t sound like a risk to most of you, but it certainly was one for me. It even took me a few days to respond and say “Yes” when I was offered this wonderful gift. Partially because it’s just hard for me to receive personal generosity, and partially because of the risks involved.

Not the least of which was spending ten days with people I’d met only three weeks before—and three others I didn’t meet till I landed in LA!

But I felt instantly comfortable to just be myself. And I hit it right off with the Pennsylvania gang. We had so much fun together. I’m incredibly grateful for these new friendships.

Some other ways, big and small, that I risked during the trip:

  • I left my laptop behind. It was the longest I’ve gone computer-less in almost a decade!
  • I did an outdoor adventure tour in Cabo. I zip-lined 1800 feet, rock-climbed, rappelled, and cable-walked over a gorgeous canyon. Invigoratingly frightening!

  • I braved the pool on the roughest day at sea. The swells in the pool were ridiculously huge, which was enough to get this non-water girl hyperventilating. But I did it.
  • I went dancing. And I can’t dance. But I had a blast, and I might go so far as to say it was therapeutic.

Most of my time (when I wasn’t sleeping past noon… a -hem…) was spent just chilling and being ridiculous with my friends. [I discovered that I make a weird face in 95% of pictures...]

And while we went to Karaoke pretty much every night, this is as close as I got to singing…

Looks like a fab holiday!! Love that you left your laptop behind…a true refresher!!! Had to laugh about the dancing…I pretty much resemble Elaine Benes (Seinfeld) there myself.

You should see a little something coming @ you in the next week from the great Pacific North West. ;D

  4. Amy says:

I love this post for so many reasons…

    …the photos
    …the fun they represent
    …the generous gifts given
    …the risks represented

Most of all… I love you.

  5. Nikki says:

Those wonderful, generous, easy to get-to-know people are from Pennsylvania? That explains everything. :) (My home state for 22 years.)

So thrilled for you. God is good and He so reflects that in His people.

  6. Stacey says:

My heart skipped a beat when I saw those outdoor adventure pictures. Waaaaaaay risky!

  7. @ngie says:

Wowzers! That is some risky business! I am verry proud of you. I think the riskiest thing in this whole post was the leaving behind of your computer. :) Ha! Really though, this is amazing. God is so good to answer our prayers in such creative ways.

By the way: riesgo [ree AYS go] … maybe you knew that already. :)

    • Nathan says:

AHHH! you beat me to it!!!!

      • @ngie says:

The question might have been rhetorical, though. I was taking a risk at insulting our dear Alece’s intelligence in putting it out there. ;-)

        • alece says:

i definitely didn’t know it! and i love that you answered it!

        • Nathan says:

Yeah, I knew she was at least somewhat serious. I just have a slight weakness to the Spanish language. Love it to death. =)

          • @ngie says:

Natán, siempre es tan refescante encontrarme con alguién mas que comparte la misma pasión que yo tengo para este idioma tan fascinante. Que sigas adelante en tu amor del castellano.

            • Nathan says:

ayyy que rico! me gusta mucho tus palabras maravillosas. =) Yo tambien, amiga, yo tambien. Iré a D. F. en Marzo!!! Estoy emocionado! Donde has aprendido tu espanol? Vives en Bolivia? Andale!!! =) Que bueno! Quiero vivir en Mexico. jaja. ya.

              • @ngie says:

Así es, aprendí mi español aquí en Bolivia, donde he vivido hace ocho años ahora. Buena suerte en todo para que llegues a Mexico, hasta que para vivir allí.

(thanks, Alece, for allowing us to chat here.)
                :)

  8. Mary says:

Yay! I’m so happy for you! I’m glad you had a wonderful time. :)

  9. Jen Griffin says:

Love the pictures! What fun!! :)

  10. thegypsymama says:

Is it weird to miss someone you only just met? Because I do. I miss you.

  11. Katy says:

Whoa! You are sooo risky with those cabo adventures–not to mention the rest! Definitely looks like you guys had lots of laughs and fun times :)

  12. Becky says:

It looks like you had an amazing time! The outdoor adventure would be so much fun to do! I like being outdoors. :)
That’s great you got to get away and relax with friends!

  13. No Karoake?

    What a fun trip!

  14. Natalie Jane says:

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!!

  15. Michelle says:

Wow it looks like you had a blast! Way to go Alece! You are absolutely gorgeous by the way. Have a great day!

  16. Terri Poss says:

WOW! I’m impressed with ALL that! I’m not sure I would take those kinds of risks. Cable walk-yes, karaoke-yes, pool-NO WAY! I’m so excited for you on so many levels. I finally chose my word for the year. It took some pondering. I finally settled on GROW. And God is stretching me in some familiar and some very unfamiliar ways. Not all of it is comfortable, but I guess that’s what it’s all about. My grandmother had a plaque that hung in our house growing up, and now it’s in my kitchen. It says, “So long as you’re green you grow. When you think you’re ripe you begin to get rotten.” I love that. So my word is GROW. I see some cool, fun, exciting growth in you too. Such a joy. Love and hugs to you.

  17. Lisa says:

What an example you’re setting of doing it afraid. I can only imagine the depth of growth going on in the very deepest parts of you.

You know the old saying: If you ain’t livin’, you’re dyin’. You’re livin’, Alece. So many who feel joy in their hearts about that, myself included.

  18. Marisa says:

I’m getting anxious at just the thought of leaving my computer behind for that long. Eek.

    I love these pictures!

And I’m so proud of you for jumping right into your year of risk

  19. Michelle says:

It’s good to see all those smiles.

    So happy for you.

  20. Debra says:

Pure JOY! Does my heart good to see it in person and all over your face. Love you!

  21. annie says:

YAY!!! :) Thanks for the links. :) Yeah, the second was the one I was thinking of, but the first did me good to read as well.

Oh, and by the way … we have almost the same haircut right now. How crazy is that?! Okay, so maybe not that crazy. But … ironic. I think. Is that ironic? anyway.

SO glad you had fun! My eyes were bugging at spending a vacation with a bunch of people you had just met … and complete strangers! *gulp* Glad you ‘dove in’!

  22. Tonggu Momma says:

I don’t know how to say it in Spanish, but in Mandarin it’s 冒险 (mao4 xian3). Kudos to you for taking such big risks… although I must say that you are Absolutely! Psycho! for rock-climbing, rappelling, cable-walking, and zip-lining 1800 feet in the air. *shudder*

  23. Stacey says:

Aaaahhhhh Lecers! I love. Love. LOVE these pics! I am so happy for and proud of you! It looks like you had a really great time and are following through on being a “risky girl” ;D! Awesome!

  24. Mishel says:

It put a smile on my face just to see your beautiful smile in the pics and the fact that you are ‘living’ despite the pain. I know how very hard that is, but it is truly what we need to do to survive.

And I am so proud of all your RISK-taking!! Good girl!! : ) After my husband left, I went out and took snow boarding lessons…and I was 42 years old! It was one of the happiest days in the midst of a very dark time…and one of the best things I’ve ever done.

    Blessings to you sweet Alece!

  25. tam says:

love, love, love these pics!!! felt like i was there!

ok. the slide show…how did you get your mouth to do that in pic #4??? that is impressive. in a weird kinda way.

and…if your smile was any more gorgeous, id have to break up with you. seriously, alece…disgustingly beautiful.

i am so glad you did this. and i am so proud of you.

    love you deeply.

  26. yeller says:

seeing you smile makes me smile!

    you’re beautiful!

  27. Pablo says:

In my opinion the biggest risk is not wanting to return from the trip, but you did return.
It doesn´t matter how you say “risk” in spanish because it feels exactly the same.
When you take a risk the “one word” you have to know is Jesus (spanish=Jesus), thats the “one word” for every year and every day that would give you more Glory and less grit.

  28. That sounds like a fun adventure, especially the canyon part.
