twenty-eight: days and more

If you know much about me, you know I hate picking favorites.

And while I’m learning a lot about my need to assert myself more—even in simple things like what I want and like—I’m still not ready to declare anything an absolute favorite. I don’t know that I ever will.

So while these aren’t my favorites, some movies I absolutely love are:

  • Charlie’s Angels (is it “the Chad”?)
  • Finding Nemo
  • 28 Days (look at my package!)
  • You’ve Got Mail
  • Father of the Bride 2 (every party has a pooper…)
  • Up Close & Personal
  • The Mexican (tit for tat, tat for tit, wah wah wah…)
  • Oceans Eleven
  • French Kiss (lactose intolerant!)

What are some of your favorite most loved movies?

And yet you have a tag called favorites :-) … you are too cute.

    My most loved movies are

    #1
    Far and Away

    #2 and #3 (tied)
    In Good Company
    Australia

Of the ones on your list that I have seen I like all of them. We should go to the movies together some time. :-)

  2. @ngie says:

No way! First again! I am rockin’! :-)

  3. Jody says:

I’m with you on the not picking absolute favorites!

  4. Heidi says:

We definately could share a popcorn together.

    here’s a couple more

Sleepless in Seattle (huge Meg ryan fan)
Silence of the lambs/accuser (Jodie Foster fan)
    Notebook (for the tears)

  5. danielle says:

its funny that your tag is “favorites”.

pride and prejudice (with colin firth)
    italian job
how to lose a guy in 10 days
    jason bourne series
    oceans 11
    sweet home alabama

    sense and sensibility
    rush hour

  6. sarah says:

I always have “favorites” but I tend to have many “favorites” that people say, “But wasn’t such and such your favorite?” :) I believe you can have lots! :) ha!

So with that here are some of my “favorite” movies…..

    Serendipity
    Sleepless in Seattle
    Chocolate
Cars (this is Andrew’s favorite too!)
    13 going on 30
    You’ve got mail
    Pretty in Pink
    Farris Buller’s Day Off
    Dirty Dancing

Oh…..I could go on an on with my favorites!!! But these are just a few…… :)

  7. Louise says:

French Kiss “My @ss is twitching. You people make my @ss twitch” AND “Lactose intolerant!” – complete with raised triumphant arms. I love that scene.

Dead Poets Society “Captain, my Captain”

Sound of Music “…the HILLs are alive…”

Love Actually “Dad, she’s the ONE.”

    Spiderman (all of them)

Fantastic Four – the bit where he breaths in and has to tug to get his belt to notch. Hilarious. Hubby does it every time he wants to make me laugh at an awkward moment.

Moulin Rouge, Romeo and Juliet – haven’t seen Australia yet but anything by Luhrmann.

Dances with Wolves “stands…with a fist”

  8. Becca says:

    You have Paballong up there!
Lots of cool things happened in that church.

  9. alece says:

gigi — australia’s a new one that’s out isn’t it? i haven’t really heard much about it except a few “i loved it!”s… i’ll have to do some digging into that one.

    jodes — i knew you’d understand.

heidi — silence of the lambs? me, too!

yeller — i do love me some sweet home alabama.

sarah — can you believe i’ve never seen serendipity? OR dirty dancing?!

louise — french kiss has so many lines that i say unbelievably often. “happy people make my ass twitch” is among them. i’m thrilled you wrote that!

    becca — yes maam…

  10. faithstart says:

um i dont know. I like a lot of movies but ones i would watch over and over again, thats hard to say.
here are some that i like a lot:

Sex and the city (the movie)
    zoolander

um ok i cant think of anymore!!!!
I am way more of a tv series person! so here are my fav shows that i can watch over and over and NEVER tire of!!

    FRIENDS
    Sex and the city
    the office
    24
    lost

sorry that was not the question, but its all I’ve got!
    Love ya!

  11. faithstart says:

oh you may suffer from lack of assertion, but i suffer from indecisiveness. Like i cant even choose fav movies, or ask me where i want to go out with you to lunch and i will NEVER answer. I think i am afraid I will make a poor choice and let someone down. Like right now, i have to choose a movie for a group of friends to see at 3 today, this is a big deal for me!! we all suffer from something. Mine is indecisiveness.

  12. marc says:

    I’d have to say…
    Accepted
    Iron Man
Empire Records (if you haven’t seen it go rent it)

That might be it for now… there are more but I can’t think of them.

  13. traceepersiko says:

I think i am more of a guy when it comes to most loved movies. I love movies with action. I LOVE movies that display amazing leadership and good character.

    all time fav-most quotable
    -Jaws

-lake placid (betty white still feeding the aligators)

  14. Michelle says:

    French Kiss

    AND

    Pride and Prejudice
    A Room With A View
    Howard’s End
    The Remains of the Day
    Meet Joe Black
    A River Runs Through It

(Can anyone say Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt — excellent actors!)

  15. Char says:

My Big Fat Greek Wedding ” Bibobsy”
13 Going on 30 (way to true to my life)
    You’ve Got Mail
Far and Away (need to see it again soon!)
    28 days

    There are soo many more…

  16. mandie says:

Amazing Grace…definitely at the top of the list.
And for some reason I can’t think of any other movies right now…

My mom and I watch You’ve Got Mail together all the time…I think I can quote the whole movie now.

  17. alece says:

faith — i hate zoolander. oh my skunks. can’t stand it. but i love all the tv shows you listed… except i’ve never seen sex & the city. (show or the movie).

i’ve always blamed it on indecisiveness, too. i’m incredible unable to make up my mind. but i’ve recently discovered it’s because i don’t want to assert my own thought… cause i don’t want to upset others or put my needs before theirs. interesting stuff to say the least. (ah. the power of a counseling couch!)

marc — how have i never seen any of those movies???

trace — i do enjoy a good action movie. and princess bride? classic. i can quote far too much of it.

michelle — i’ve never seen legends of the fall. i think i need to.

char — that “bibopsy” part cracks me just thinking of it!

mandie — i love, love, love you’ve got mail. “monday, tuesday, thursday, wednesday.” ugh, so many great lines.

  18. Cindy Beall says:

    Singin’ In The Rain

  22. sarah says:

Oh my Alece, you have to see Dirty Dancing! :) ha! I remember that movie was concidered pretty risky, but now….it’s nothing compared to what they show now.

And Serendipity…..it’s a good romantic chick flick, plus it’s set in NYC…..perfect! :)

  23. alece says:

note to self: rent serendipity and dirty dancing!

  25. Lisa says:

Oops…… Meant to write that Cameron Crowe is my favorite director.

  26. gitz says:

Cindy… you just described my Christmas Eve movie selection… if you minus Invincible add in Bells of St. Mary’s. Swear to God.

    Out of Africa
    You’ve Got Mail
    Something to Talk About
    The Notebook
    Harry Potter movies
    All the Bourne movies
    Pretty Woman

It’s funny… Tam recently asked me a few of my favorites and I said the same thing – I can’t pick just one of anything. I don’t think it’s that I’m indecisive, I just think a lot of things make me happy :)

  27. alece says:

lisa – i’ve never seen the spinal tap one… but i keep hearing its name…

gitz – i own Out of Africa but have yet to see it. i think i’ll like it. and oh yes! pretty woman – classic!

  28. Lisa says:

You haven’t seen Spinal Tap???!!! Only then will you understand what it means when you can take something up to “eleven”……….. :D

  29. alece says:

hmmm… might be time to raid walmart’s $5.50 dvd bin for some of these old classics…

  30. @ngie says:

    Eighty-ten comments later… :-)

Yes, “Australia” is a new one out. It just hit the theaters this week here in Cochabamba and I saw it two nights in a row (Fri. with my man and Sat. with a friend). I could t-a-l-k movies with you. I like movies so much.

Oh, and Sarah’s “Serendipity” – never seen it either. Her little plug when she said it was set in New York made me chuckle because it seems as though there are hundreds of movies set in New York. There are so many that every time I watch a newer one now I look really hard at the street scenes in hopes of catching a glimpse of your Natalie in the crowd.

  31. faithstart says:

ya i cant wait to get me sorted out!!

  32. For Chistmas- Elf and White e Christmas
    You’ve Got Mail
    Dirty Dancing
    Bed of Roses
    The Incredibles
How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days
    The Sound of Music
Meet Me in St. Louie(any Judy Garland movie)

    There are so many!!

  33. Hope says:

I’ve seen The Hunt for Red October dozens of times and never get sick of it. Last night I watched Sleepless in Seattle for about the 10th time. I just can’t commit to one unless I can choose one from each category. :)

  34. alece says:

@ — “my natalie”. that made my heart smile.

jennifer — you’re a musical girl, are ya?!

hope — one from each category works for me!

  35. Becca says:

Motorcycle diaries is an incredible movie.

  36. alece says:

i’ve never heard of it before!

  37. hannahruthie says:

There are way too many to get particular.
I love anything with Kate Winslet. Titanic, The Holiday, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Finding Neverland..etc.

A good action movie is ALWAYS good. Bourne movies, Iron Man, Batman Begins..etc.

I think the only movie that I can watch over and over and want to watch again right when it ends is 13 Going on 30. There’s just something about that movie.

  38. hannahruthie says:

oh and pretty much any 80′s movie and Godspell! Don’t know how I could forget those!

  39. alece says:

i really like jennifer garner (hello… sydney bristow!), but i wasn’t a huge fan of that movie. i DO like that one scene where she says, “mattie! it’s thriller!”

  40. @ngie says:

“Motorcycle Diaries” is an interesting film; I might even call it good, but it is a little too close to home with the controversial effects of Che still at play here in Bolivia. There is a new Che one coming out that I have mixed emotions about as well.

  41. alece says:

sadly i don’t actually know much about him or his “legacy”. but i understand what you meant about being tentative about a movie hitting too close too home.

  42. jaceinafrica08 says:

my all time favorites are : Something new, drumline, walk the line, prime, blue crush, grind, step up 1 and 2, stomp the yard, and a walk to remember.

i don’t think i can go anywhere without those movies in my collection. a good mix of everything :)

  43. gitz says:

@alece… the fact that you just talked about Sydney Bristow makes me want to invite you over.

I watch dvds of Alias more than I watch movies.

    FAVORITE SHOW EVER.

  44. alece says:

jacers – you and all your ghetto movies. ha! i love you!

gitz – someday i hope to own the boxed set. i love it!

  45. Edward Scissorhands
    Pride and Prejudice
    Amazing Grace
    Princess Pride
    Wizard of OZ
    Nightmare Before Christmas

  46. Thoko says:

I watched Maid in Manhattan for the 3rd time last week, it got me thinking.

    Bridgette Jones” Diary ( 1 &2)
    The Last Holiday
    Head over Heels
How to loose a man in 10 days
    Step up
    Saving the Last dance

  47. Louise says:

How on earth did I miss The Princess Bride “My name is Inego Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die”?

  48. Amy says:

I could put so many of your “not-favs” on my own list… but I’d also add…

    -matrix
    -Failure to Launch
-How to Lose a Guy in 10 days

    …okay, 2 out of 3 have Matthew McCona-hotty in them… maybe I’m making a different kind of list…

  49. Natalie Jane says:

To think that I almost didn’t read these comments. I haven’t been in any movies yet that I’m aware of.

Galaxy Quest – I would watch this movie right after watching it.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CfKDVdRVyew&feature=related

  50. Natalie Jane says:

Also, you can’t beat the cast in that movie.

    Tim Allen
    Sigourney Weaver
    Alan Rickman
    Tony Shalhoub
    Sam Rockwell
    Justin Long
    Rainn Wilson
    Enrico Colantoni

  51. (hi. let’s pretend like i’m not here bc i’m supposed to be on vacation.
but i can’t help myself – i HAVE to say that 28 days is one of my all-time favorite movies – and THAT scene is fantabulous. that line was spontaneous, you know? ;)
    love you)

  52. I like packages. Ha ha ha.

  53. dn says:

    Band of Brothers

  54. alece says:

motts — i’ve never seen pride and prejudice… and as for your “i like packages” remark… that’s what she said!

thoko — i remember loving “save the last dance”. i should watch that again.

    louise — classic.

kitty — i giggle every time you say “Matthew McCona-hotty”

nat — you better let me know the moment you are!

manders — i mean mysterious random commenter who wasn’t really here — i had no idea that was improv. really!?

dn — we had a whole commemorative boxed set of the band of brothers series… and it’s gone AWOL. borrowed and not returned. i hate when that happens!

  55. JudiFree.com says:

I’m with you on “You’ve Got Mail”, but some of my favs are:

    That Thing You Do
    Romeo and Juliet
    Home Alone
    Sister Act
    Empire Records

  56. annie says:

Okay, well, I had to read through everyone’s suggestions first, and I’m glad I did, because … I too am TERRIBLE at favorites, and plus, for some reason I can never actually think of things I like a lot when put on the spot.

My one very obvious favorite (very FEW things ever reach favorite level) is Pride and Prejudice. But not just any P&P. Definitely the 5 hour A&E version with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. THE best best best example of how to faithfully bring a classic book to the screen. LOVE it.

    Other loves:
*Two Weeks Notice (makes me LAUGH!)
*Ironman (Robert Downey Jr. did AWESOME in that movie. The acting and personal development of the character was incredible. Plus it was just REALLY well done.)
*Princess Bride (how can you not love it?)
*Bridget Jones’ Diary (which is suspiciously like P&P – maybe one reason why I love it.)
*Finding Neverland (thanks to Hannah for this reminder. VERY good movie.)
*Far and Away (how can you argue with that screenplay?)
*Family Man (retelling of It’s a Wonderful Life)
*The Shop Around the Corner (this is the original that You’ve Got Mail was based on – from 1940 starring Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan – love it)
*Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (‘bless your beautiful hide …’)
*Love Actually (minus the nudity and a couple questionable themes – it’s very well done)
*Much Ado About Nothing (the ‘entrapment’ scene makes the WHOLE movie)
*An Ideal Husband and The Importance of Being Ernest (these are both Oscar Wilde plays, and both star Rupert Everett – they are simple and funny, with several twists, and a pleasant theatrical feel – fun!)
    *The Man from Snowy River

Favorite genre – Period romance/drama. I thought of a few more than I anticipated there. I’m sure there’s more. I love a good movie.

  57. Didn’t you already say that?

  58. alece says:

judi — just reading “That Thing You Do” started the soundtrack playing in my head. i can’t stand that movie because i can’t stand that one song that plays through pretty much the entire thing!

annie — there are so many moments in two weeks notice that i absolutely love. yeah, that’s pretty high on my favorites list!

motts — HUH??? (i like that we confuse each other in our comments!)
