eighteen: rules for living
At the start of the new millennium the Dalai Lama shared his eighteen rules for living. And now, gritty glorious friends, I’m passing them along to you.
::
1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.
2. When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.
3. Follow the three Rs:
- Respect for self
- Respect for others
- Responsibility for all your actions.
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.
6. Don’t let a little dispute injure a great friendship.
7. When you realize you’ve made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.
8. Spend some time alone every day.
9. Open your arms to change, but don’t let go of your values.
10. Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer.
11. Live a good, honorable life. Then when you get older and think back, you’ll be able to enjoy it a second time.
12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.
13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don’t bring up the past.
14. Share your knowledge. It’s a way to achieve immortality.
15. Be gentle with the earth.
16. Once a year, go someplace you’ve never been before.
17. Remember that the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.
18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

What stands out to you most from this list? What would you add?

that’s alpaca wisdom.
i. love. you.
Oh, those are all good!
When you realize you made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it………that one is good! Takes some humility to do that one!
Remember the best relationship is one in which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other……good stuff!
And my favorite…..Spend some time alone each day…..this is critical, especially when you always have a little person around. :)
#13 – yikes!
#12 – my goal
#17 – still chewing
#5- just love this one
That is some good advice. All of a sudden I want some Tazo tea… if you have read the little stories on the backs of the packets you know what I am talking about. :-)
The one that stood out to me was:
3. Follow the three Rs:
* Respect for self
* Respect for others
* Responsibility for all your actions.
New millennium advice I would add?
Just because it is newer does not mean it is better. Learn to find the valuable in every era.
Those are all good, lots of wisdom there. :)
The thing I would add and I would make it number 1 on the list is … ” ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ ; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ “
right now #4 is jumping at me:
“Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.”
(although I would replace the words stroke of luck with blessing.)
I like this:
“When you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”
Also, #18 is really interesting too.
9. Open your arms to change, but don
Half of the 18 have to do with your relationships w/others… The other half improve your relationship w/others – even #8. :D
I personally love “when you lose, don’t lose the lesson.” That is powerful stuff.
They are all great words of wisdom.
Picking one it would be #3, respect and responsibility.
“You must be the change you wish to see in the world.” Mahatma Gandhi
I like the whole living your life a second time one. And going someplace new.
#1 is hard for me
#18 Oh my cow.
My favorite:
Remember that silence is sometimes the best answer
7. When you realize you
Dang. Forgot to tell you that I gave you an award on my blog. You don’t have to play along if you don’t want to – I just wanted my readers to know about my favorite blogs.
I vote for 16!
Ed, I love that quote…it’s in my kitchen!
4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.
9. Open your arms to change, but don
oh my…I just realized that your count down is the date…. I haven’t gotten enough sleep or something… :)
And I like number 6….. holding grudges just isn’t productive :)
17 is mine.
thanks, guys!
I think the silence one sticks out the most for me. I like to talk you know…hello? Hello? Nevermind.
