adventures in iowa

This was my first evacuation.

Iowa City has had record-breaking floods this week. The day before Kitty and Baby Alece were released from the hospital, the water reached the street their house is on. We knew it was time to leave.

Dave packed up all the valuables and essentials from the house (including all my stuff, bless his heart!) and drove me and Silas two hours away to stay with some friends in Missouri. He turned around and headed back toward the flood waters of Iowa City to spend the night in the hospital with Amy and Junior. They were released yesterday and drove here to join us.

Every time we hear the news or see pictures of the devastation, we’re flooded (pun intended) with gratefulness that we left when we did.

We are all safe and healthy; Mom and Baby are doing wonderfully well. I don’t have real access to the internet here, so I’m going to continue to be AWOL for a while. I’d appreciate your prayers. No… not for my internet withdrawals, but for everyone affected by the flood, for us to be able to return home soon, and for minimal damage to the Rieps’ home.

Thanks, blog family…

  1. Totally praying for you and “your family” that you are with…that they will be home wherever they may be. whether that be inside their house or wherever God places them. Glad you are safe.

You’ll defintely be in my prayers as well as the Rieps and all the those effected by flooding and storm damage. Take care.

As a missionary you kinda always have it in the back of your mind that you may have to be evacuated from your country of service if things get too bad… but Iowa?! God be with you all. FYP

  4. Wow. What an adventure, eh?

  5. HOLY CRAP! That’s nuts. I’m glad you’re alright. Why does all this weird adventure stuff always happen to you?

Did you get a chance to see my blog yet?

  6. Michelle says:

    Praying for you all…

  7. I’ve been watching the floods in Iowa for three days now, at least thankful that none of my blog buddies were in the vicinity of Cedar Rapids… and NOW you tell me??

I have some catch-up praying to do :-)

Glad to know little Al and her M and D are ok too! :-)

  8. a hurricane came once while my family was on vacation @ the beach.

they wouldn’t let us evacuate – they closed the bridge on the little island and wouldn’t let us off.

it was the STRANGEST experience of my life…

    Love ya and stay safe!!!

  10. annie says:

Oh my. I didn’t know that I knew anyone near the flooding also. I sent up a prayer for the Riep’s home. God is well able to protect it.

  11. Becca says:

    Those are some intennnse pictures.
Shame the Taco Bell is under water.

And that man can walk on water, kind of like Jesus.
    I think it’s a sign.

    Haha.

    Praying.

    Praying for all involved!

You’re in Missouri eh? If you see lots of people who look just like each other and are married to one another…say “hey” for me…that’s my family!

    love you Alece!

  13. TheNorEaster says:

Pretty amazing what a storm can do, isn’t it? We’re getting a nor’easter over here now. The dogs are sacred of the thunder so Louie–my 13-year-old chocolate lab–hides in the bathroom and Sam–of “Golden Days” fame–takes the spot under the table.

Me? I’m just typing quick before the power goes out! ;)

Glad everybody made it out okay, Alece.

  14. cathi says:

all the people in my little world are praying for you!

  15. Bran Muffin says:

Wow, I’m with Love, NOW you tell us?! ;-)

My friend lives an hour north of the Illinois border and she said there is a lot of flooding around them too. :( I lived in Missouri for three years….where are you at there?

I’m SO GLAD that junior and mommy are safe and sound. And you of course! ;-) My, you’ve had quite the trip haven’t you dear? Praying you’re safe and sound and warm and happy, and not TOO homesick. A little homesickness is good, but I hope it’s not hindering your trip any.

Love you girl and stay dry! :D

  16. alece says:

thank you guys for all your prayers… we really appreciate it!

  17. alece says:

    just as an update…

we’ll all be heading to amy’s parents in ohio in a few days. which is going to be wonderful on many levels. it’s also challenging and overwhelming for dave and amy, so i sure do appreciate your continued prayers.

  18. katie says:

so, i was hoping your first Iowa experience would be memorable (you know…corn, cows, the worlds biggest truck stop…), but this is crazy…

  19. alece says:

k-mart — i know, right! my one and only visit to iowa is an unforgettable one for sure. dang, i miss you…
